Sundar has failed to gather much game time over the last 12 months with the all-rounder missing series after series due to various injuries. The issues started back in July 2021 when Sundar suffered from a fractured finger while batting in a warm-up game. It resulted in the young all-rounder missing the entire domestic season.
The 22 year-old was struck with Covid-19 before the white ball series in South Africa in January 2022. An injured hamstring resulted in Sundar missing the white ball home series against West Indies and Sri Lanka as well, which took place a month later.
The Sunrisers Hyderabad star split his webbing during IPL 2022 and missed out on five games in the franchise-based tournament. Since his extensive rehabilitation, Sundar got some play time after the BCCI helped him a county deal with Lancashire. He was expected to return to the Indian team set up for the upcoming Zimbabwe. However, yet another injury sees Shahbaz Ahmed walk in as Washington Sundar’s replacement for the three-match ODI series.

The 31 year old opener has also been named as the new skipper of the side with Dhawan set to act as his deputy. Both the teams head into the series with solid form as the Men in Blues recorded a massive series win over West Indies. Zimbabwe, on the other hand, recorded twin series wins over Bangladesh in ODIs as well as T20Is.
India’s squad for 3 ODIs: KL Rahul (Captain), Shikhar Dhawan (vice-captain), Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shubman Gill, Deepak Hooda, Rahul Tripathi, Ishan Kishan (wicket-keeper), Sanju Samson (wicket-keeper), Shardul Thakur, Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel, Avesh Khan, Prasidh Krishna, Mohd Siraj, Deepak Chahar, Shahbaz Ahmed.
