The Big Bash League (BBL) is Australia’s premier Twenty20 cricket competition, captivating fans with its fast-paced action and thrilling matches. The men’s league was established in 2011, featuring eight city-based franchises. The popularity of the men’s league promoted the formation of the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) in 2015. These competitions are held during the Australian summer and have become some of the biggest cricket leagues in the world. This article talks about the draft process which takes place in BBL.
The Big Bash League draft is set to take place on 1st September 2024 in Melbourne. This year will be the third season the BBL has held an overseas player draft and the second for the WBBL. The players selected in the draft have a pre-determined fixed salary, as there is no bidding. The players are divided into four different bands. These are Platinum, Gold, Silver, and Bronze. A table representing the salaries of each of these bands in these leagues is mentioned below.
Band | BBL | WBBL |
Platinum | $360K-$420K | $110K |
Gold | $300K | $90K |
Silver | $200K | $65K |
Bronze | Up To $100K | Up To $40K |
The Big Bash League (BBL) draft allows teams to select international players. Teams pick in a set order, with each round offering a chance to choose from a pool of registered players. This system ensures a fair distribution of talent, enhancing team competitiveness and league excitement. You can sign one player on a long-term deal outside the draft and allocate one spot to them. The rest of the international players need to be drafted.
Eight teams will participate in both the men’s and women’s leagues. These eight franchises are the Hobart Hurricanes, Melbourne Renegades, Sydney Thunder, Brisbane Heat, Sydney Sixers, Melbourne Stars, Adelaide Strikers, and Perth Scorchers. The order of picking was decided by the lottery system and is different for both the leagues.
There are four rounds of drafts. The first round represents the platinum band of players only; the second is the platinum band and gold band; the third is the gold band and silver band; and finally, the silver band and the bronze band.
