Barmy Army Taunts Steve Smith Over Sandpaper Gate Case During Ashes Test 2023: On Day 4 of the first Test of the 2023 Ashes series, England fans heckled Steve Smith with a chant that referenced the ball-tampering scandal that occurred in 2018.
The first Test of the 2023 Ashes series is at a critical juncture. The fourth day was a roller coaster for both teams. However, off the field, England’s team’s fan group, the Barmy Army, also made their presence felt. Steve Smith was their target this time.
The English fans chanted, “Steve, we saw you cry on the telly,” reminding him of the first press conference he held after the Sandpapergate scandal (a cheating scandal that involved the Australian team’s attempt to alter the condition of the ball by using sandpaper), which is illegal in cricket. The scandal led to suspensions for three players, including captain Steve Smith and vice captain David Warner, who broke down in tears in front of the reporters.

This is not the first time that a player has been targeted by the Barmy Army. In the past, great players such as Mitchell Johnson, Shane Warne, and Ricky Ponting have also been on the receiving end of the group’s chants. Over the years, cricket fans have been divided over the chants, with some finding them humorous and others finding them offensive. In this particular instance, social media reactions were also divided, with some users supporting the chants and others criticising them.
Even if the crowd is active, the battle between the bat and the bowl remains the main attraction. The match is set up for an exciting conclusion because Day 4’s spectacular finish shows that no team has the advantage. As a result, Day 5 can be anybody’s game.
The Barmy Army is a group of England cricket fans who are known for their enthusiastic support of the team. They are frequently seen wearing brightly coloured clothing and singing songs, and they are always prepared to make a lot of noise.
The Barmy Army has been a constant presence at England cricket matches for many years. They have become one of the most well-known and popular fan groups in the world due to their sense of humour, their love of cricket, and their passion for the England team.
Stuart Broad’s brilliant late burst rekindled England’s hopes of winning a thrilling first Ashes test on Monday, just as Australia appeared to have grabbed the upper hand. Australia calmly set about their 281-run win target after bowling England out for 273 just before tea on a shifting fourth day, but ended the day unstable at 107/3.
