West Indies won the toss in the 2nd ODI and decided to bat first. The hosts got off to a fiery start with openers managing a 65-run partnership for the first wicket. The Men in Maroon rode on Shai Hope’s 13th ODI ton alongside cameos from Shamarh Brooks and Nicholas Pooran to set a target of 311.
India on the other hand, saw Dhawan walk back to the hut after scoring just 13 runs. Shubman Gill scored 43 while Suryakumar Yadav was dismissed cheaply for nine. Shreyas Iyer and Sanju Samson stitched a 99-run partnership for the fourth wicket but failed to convert their innings into a big score as India found itself in a spot of bother. However, the Men in Blue found a new hero in Axar Patel. The left-hander scored 64 runs from just 35 balls, with his fiery half-century helping the visitors register their highest successful ODI run chase in the West Indies.
Axar Patel was awarded the player of the match for his match-winning heroics with the bat. The 28-year-old spoke on his performance after the game. He was quoted saying, “I think this is a special one. It came at a crucial time and also helped the team to win the series. We have done the same in the IPL. We just needed to remain calm and keep the intensity up. I was playing an ODI after close to 5 years. I would want to continue performing like this for my team.”

Dhawan also went on to acknowledge Axar Patel’s performances and the teams’ overall outing in the second ODI. He said, “It was a great team performance. Boys didn’t lose the self-belief, that is amazing. Iyer, Sanju Samson, Axar Patel, everyone was amazing. Even Avesh came out in his debut game and scored those 11 important runs. Thanks to IPL, they perform on a huge stage. “
The Indian skipper also spoke how the team is learning while thanking the support staff. He added, “I felt that we bowled nicely. We started a little slow. Shubman batted well. The Iyer-Samson partnership made a huge difference. Boys are learning. Thanks to the support staff as well. They have been doing a tremendous job. It was a great feeling when I scored a 100 in my 100th ODI game. I would want to congratulate Hope for doing the same.”
