Australia Records Fastest Test Win In 2 Decades

Australia registered a massive victory over Sri Lanka in the first Test on Friday. The tourists wrapped the game up during the first session of Day 3 to take a 1-0 lead in the two-match series. The Aussie spinners came up with some top-class bowling performances helping Pat Cummins’ side register their fastest ever Test victory in the last 20 years.

Sri Lanka wrapped up the Aussie batting quickly at the start of the day as the visitors managed to put 321 on the board. Cameron Green led the scoring charts for Australia with the all-rounder amassing 77 runs off 109 balls. He was well supported by opener Usman Khawaja, who register 71 runs off 130 balls while Alex Carey’s quickfire 45 off 47 helped the tourists taking a lead of 109 runs.

Trailing the Aussies by a score just above 100 runs, Sri Lankan batters had all the time in the world to settle in on the pitch. They started off the innings well with Dimuth Karunaratne and Pathum Nissanka hitting Mitchell Starc for 17 runs in the first over. However, things began to drastically change Nathan Lyon arrived to bowl.

The Aussie spinners ran past Sri Lanka’s batting order in their second innings with the SL batters failing to strike the right balance. The hosts did not bat sensibly on a track that was assisting the spinners. Their thought process of taking an aggressive route costed them heavily as the home side was bowled out for a mere 113.

Lyon and Swepson kicked-off the debacle with the duo taking four and two wickets respectively as the former picked up nine wickets in the match. Travis Head too joined in the party and ended up with four wickets against his name in just 2.5 overs.

Head’s clean-up of the SL tail saw the host’s innings wrap up in just 22.5 overs, setting a target of just five runs for Australia. David Warner hit a four and a six in the first over to Ramesh Mendis to end the game. Green was adjudged the Player of the Match for his fantastic batting display during Australia’s first innings.
