Australia, England, and India In Discussions To launch Women’s Champions League After Success Of WPL

Australia, England, and India In Discussions To launch Women’s Champions League After Success Of WPL: Australia, India, and England are currently in high-level talks about launching a women’s Twenty20 Champions League as early as next year. This decision comes after the remarkable achievement of the initial Women’s Premier League (WPL) in India.

In recent weeks, the chief executive and chairman of Cricket Australia, Nick Hockley and Mike Baird, have been in discussions with their counterparts at the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) regarding a concept. These meetings took place during the Lord’s Ashes Test and the World Test Championship final at the Oval.

Women’s Champions League: Revenue Potential

The Women’s Champions League, already established and with the potential to generate significant revenue through broadcasting deals and sponsorships, is expected to feature teams from the Women’s Premier League (WPL), Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL), and Women’s Hundred, pitting some of the world’s top female athletes against each other.

Women’s Champions League: Participating Teams

The organisers are considering the inclusion of teams from other leagues as well, like the Caribbean Premier League, in the tournament, but they want to start with a more focused approach and expand gradually. Host nations would take turns organising the matches, and the revenue generated from ticket sales and corporate hospitality would stay with them.

Alyssa Healy, the captain of Australia, has emphasised the importance of wider investment in the development pathways of the women’s game in more countries.

Women’s Champions League: Revenue Distribution

Furthermore, if the league is declared, the revenue will be distributed among the participating countries. The introduction will be quite similar to the Men’s Champions League, which started immediately after the first season of the IPL.

Many believe that introducing a women’s edition of the tournament is the natural progression for the cricket industry, as it would allow the boards to take advantage of the tremendous popularity of the WPL. While other teams from various leagues could potentially participate, the current strategy is to prioritise a focused approach and expand from there.
