The highly anticipated Asia Cup 2022 has been officially shifted to the UAE amidst the turmoil in Sri Lanka which forced the Island nation to walk away from hosting the competition. Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) will still be tagged as the hosts of the tournament, which is scheduled to take place from August 27 and September 11 but will be played in a different venue.
The upcoming multi-nation competition is all set to be played in middle east Asia after various multiple boards decided upon the change in venue. Such a decision was taken considering the economic and political crisis in Sri Lanka.
Recently, few protestors were on the verge of invading the stadium during Sri Lanka’s second Test match against Australia. Citing the safety of the players, a change in the venue has been decided by Sri Lanka’s cricketing board.
This year’s Asia Cup is set to be hosted in the UAE, from 27th August 2022 to 11th September 2022.

The Asian Cricket Council released a statement announcing the change in venue for the upcoming 6 nation tournament. It read as, “Considering the prevailing situation in Sri Lanka, the ACC after extensive deliberation has unanimously concluded that it would be appropriate to relocate the tournament (Asia Cup) from Sri Lanka to UAE.”
SLC President Shammi Silva also spoke on the ACC’s decision to shift the tournament to the UAE. He said, “We were really looking forward to hosting our Asian neighbors in Sri Lanka for the much-anticipated Asia Cup. While I fully stand by the ACC’s decision to shift the Asia Cup to UAE considering the current context and magnitude of the event, Sri Lanka cricket will work closely with the ACC and the Emirates Cricket Board to ensure that we still have an exciting edition of the Asia Cup.”
The upcoming edition of the Asia Cup is set to be played by 6 teams. The likes of India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh are the 5 confirmed participants that will be participating in the event. The sixth team is yet to be finalized upon.
It is also important to know that the Asia Cup 2022 will be played in the T20 format instead of the One Day Cricket. The decision to play the tournament in the shortest format of the game has been taken in order to help the teams prepare for the ICC T20 World Cup in Australia. India will head into the tournament as the defending champions having won the title in 2016 as well as 2018.
