Football transfers have always been a dramatic theatre of negotiations, last-minute twists, and bitter rivalries. However, the late drama involving Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, and Eberechi Eze was simply pure entertainment. The 2025 summer transfer window started with Arsenal being linked with Eze, but they seemed to leave the deal as quickly as they had entered it, and Tottenham Hotspur became the favourites to sign him. While the deal between Tottenham Hotspur and Eberechi Eze looked all but set to go through, a late-minute twist saw Arsenal enter the race and hijack Tottenham’s move for Crystal Palace star Eberechi Eze. This article talks about Arsenal’s decision to hijack the move for Eze and sign him.

Arsenal was linked with Eberechi Eze at the start of the season, but they quickly moved their attention away from the player and decided to move away from the deal. Tottenham Hotspur became increasingly interested in signing Eze and became the front-runners in the race to sign the talented English star. It looked like Eze was headed to Spurs and that the club would seal the deal and announce him any day, but it did not end up happening that way. Right towards the end of the transfer window, when it looked like Spurs were finally reaching an agreement with both Crystal Palace and the player, the Gunners swooped in and hijacked the move for the English forward.

This move by the Gunners came after one of their forwards, Kai Havertz, was injured after Gameweek 1 of the English Premier League. The German star picked up a knee injury, and this caused the club to look at possible signings due to the injury. While Havertz will most likely return in a few weeks, the injury scare has given Arsenal a shock, and they have realised the importance of adding a quality player to their squad. It is because of this injury that Arsenal decided to re-enter the race for Eberechi Eze and has moved extremely swiftly to finalise the deal with both the player and the club and finalise the move right under Spurs’ noses.

Eberechi Eze is a boyhood Arsenal fan and was once even a part of their youth academy. He started his footballing journey with the Gunners and played for their youth academy from 2006 to 2011 before he was let go by the club. Eze has even spoken publicly about being released and how he always wanted to play for the first team and make an impact for them in his career. This is why, when Arsenal came calling and gave Eze the option to join the club he had been supporting since he was a little kid, the English forward jumped at the chance and quickly agreed to let go of Spurs and move to Arsenal instead.
The story of Arsenal hijacking Tottenham’s deal for Eberechi Eze will go down as one of the defining moments of the 2025 summer transfer window. It encapsulates everything that makes football transfers thrilling: rivalry, drama, and last-minute twists. Eze’s arrival at the Emirates excites Arsenal fans, who see him as another piece in Arteta’s puzzle to bring glory back to North London. For Tottenham, it is a painful reminder of how fierce competition in football can be, particularly when your greatest rival delivers the final blow. Tottenham will rue the fact that they delayed the signing of Eze till the end of the transfer window and will regret not having signed him earlier, before the Gunners made their move.
