The FIFA Club World Cup 2025 was the first time that the Club World Cup tournament was expanded to accommodate 32 teams including teams like Al-Hilal and Fluminense. While the tournament used to be a very small one and did not include too many teams in the past, this new expanded tournament looks to include more teams from all over the world in a bid to make the FIFA Club World Cup a prestigious and fun tournament. There have already been quite a few upsets in the tournament, proving that even the best teams in Europe can face severe competition. This article talks about Al-Hilal and Fluminense causing huge upsets in the tournament to advance to the quarter-final.

Al-Hilal faced Manchester City in the Round of 16, and while Al-Hilal is known to be quite good, Manchester City was the very clear favourite in this game. While Manchester City dominated, they did not end up doing enough to progress. The Cityzens opened the scoring in the 9th minute thanks to a goal by Bernardo Silva, and City managed to hold the lead till the end of the first half. However, Al-Hilal came out swinging and managed to score an equaliser in the 46th minute thanks to Marcos Leonardo. Malcolm ended up scoring in the 52nd minute to put Al-Hilal in front before Manchester City quickly responded with an equaliser by Erling Haaland in the 55th minute.

The score ended up remaining at 2-2 for the remainder of the game, and the game was forced into extra time after neither team managed to score the winner in regulation time. While everyone expected Manchester City’s depth to come in clutch, it was Al-Hilal who ended up scoring first in extra time, thanks to Kalidou Koulibaly in the 94th minute. Phil Foden managed to drag Manchester City back with an equaliser in the 104th minute, but it was Al-Hilal who had the last laugh. Marcos Leonardo ended up scoring his second goal of the game in the 112th minute to put Al-Hilal in front again, and Manchester City, unable to respond, ended up getting knocked out.

While Manchester City’s game was full of goals and both teams ended up taking the lead on different occasions, setting up a brilliant game, the same was not true for the game between Fluminense and Inter Milan. While Inter were the favourites going into the game, it was Fluminense who scored right at the start, taking the lead thanks to a 3rd minute goal by German Cano. Inter Milan spent the remainder of the game trying to score an equaliser and get back in the game, but were simply unable to do so. Hercules ended up scoring in the 90+3rd minute to put the final nail in the coffin and help Fluminense knock out Inter Milan.
Al-Hilal beating Manchester City and Fluminense beating Inter Milan were both big upsets in the FIFA Club World Cup, and both these teams will now face each other in the quarter-final. Both teams will want to prove that they are good enough to compete against the best teams in the world and will want to show the world why they should not look down upon them. Only one of these two teams will be able to move to the semi-final, but whichever team does end up progressing will hope to also reach the final and eventually lift the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup. Only time will tell whether either of these teams will end up winning the tournament.
