The AFC Asian Cup is the primary association football competition contested by the senior men’s national teams of the members of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC). This competition helps determine the continental champion of Asia. The AFC Asian Cup first took place in 1956. The competition took place every four years from 1956 to 2004. It was then decided by the AFC to move their competition to a less crowded cycle. Thus the next Asian Cup took place in 2007 and it has been taking place every four years since then.

South Korea has won the AFC Asian Cup two times, namely the 1956 and 1960 AFC Asian Cups. While they have won the tournament just twice, they are tied with Saudi Arabia for reaching the most number finals. South Korea has played six Asian Cup finals but has won just twice.
South Korea’s latest Asian Cup trophy came in 1960. They had a 100% record till then, they had played two tournaments and won two tournaments. However, since 1960 South Korea has failed to win the tournament even once. Despite having famous footballers like Son Heung-min and Park Ji-sung representing the country, they have been unable to clinch the Asian Cup title since 1960.

Iran has never lost in the final of the AFC Asian Cup. They have reached the Asian Cup final three times and won all three times. Incidentally, all their titles came in back-to-back competitions. Iran managed to win the AFC Asian Cup in 1968, 1972, and 1976. Since then, Iran has neither won an Asian Cup title nor reached the final.

Saudi Arabia has won the AFC Asian Cup title three times. They have reached the final of the Asian Cup six times but only managed to win three of those times. Saudi Arabia appeared in the Asian Cup finals for five years in a row. They were finalists in the 1984, 1988, 1992, 1996, and 2000 Asian Cups. Out of these, they managed to win the 1984, 1988, and 1996 AFC Asian Cups. Saudi Arabia’s latest final appearance came in the 2007 Asian Cup, but they were unable to clinch the title.

Japan is the most successful country in the AFC Asian Cup. They have won the title four times with the latest win coming in 2011. They also clinched the Asian Cup title in 1992, 2000, and 2004. Japan has appeared in the finals of the Asian Cup five times but has lost only once. Their first loss in an AFC Asian Cup final came very recently. Japan lost in the 2019 Asian Cup final to Qatar.
