Australia’s Adam Gilchrist has spoken on the Indian Premier League teams’ sharing how their “monopolization” and influence on ownership of the players is “dangerous”. The legendary wicketkeeper passed these statements after reports started flooding in suggesting that David Warner might not participate in the upcoming Big Bash League season.
Warner is reported to miss out on playing in Australia’s domestic T-20 competition and rather choose to feature in the United Arab Emirates T20 league. He is rumoured to play in the inaugural season of UAE’s upcoming tournament over BBL with the dates of both tournaments clashing in January.
Gilchrist looked to warn Cricket Australia (CA) to take note about Warner’s actions sharing how various other players might follow the Australian batting mainstay and forego playing in the local BBL and prefer to play in lucrative competitions like the UAE T20 league.
Speaking on SEN’s Whateley radio show Gilchrist said, “They can’t force David Warner to play in BBL, I understand that. But to let him then go off – or another player. Let’s not single out Warner because there will be other players on the radar. “
He added, “It’s all part of this global dominance that these IPL franchises are starting to create given they own a number of teams in Caribbean Premier League. It’s getting a little bit dangerous the grip that it’s having to monopolize that ownership and the ownership of the players and their talents and where they can and can’t play.”

Gilchrist also asked Cricket Australia to be focused on making sure other cricketers do not think about following Warner’s example. He shared, “If he (Warner) rides off into the sunset and says, ‘Sorry Australian cricket, I’m going to become a gun for hire for my Indian franchise team in various tournaments’, you can’t question him on that.”
The former cricketer added, “That’s his prerogative and he’s done everything he needs to get the profile and get that market value. It’s the new younger player coming in that starts to make those noises where it’ll be really challenging.”
Gilchrist has questioned the influence of IPL franchise owners as three teams in Mumbai Indians, Delhi Capitals and Kolkata Knight Riders have invested in the UAE T20 league. Cricket South Africa’s upcoming franchise-based league tournament also saw all the six teams being purchased by owners of current IPL teams.
