Former Indian star Aakash Chopra shared his thoughts on former India cricketer MS Dhoni, stating how the wicketkeeper should be able to mentor Johannesburg Super Kings. The 41 year old, who plays for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League was rumored to take up a role in the upcoming T20 league in South Africa.
Recently, the former Indian wicketkeeper was suspected to take up a mentorship role with the Johannesburg-based franchise in Cricket South Africa’s upcoming T20 league. Current CSK head coach Stephen Fleming has already been appointed as the head coach of Johannesburg. Dhoni, who was expected to join the New Zealand coach too but is now unlikely to be allowed to join the team.
Speaking in a video on his official YouTube channel, Aakash Chopra questioned why Dhoni would not be allowed to mentor a team on a different league. He said, “It is a very interesting story that MS Dhoni cannot be a mentor of Chennai’s South Africa franchise. It’s a peculiar situation that Stephen Fleming can coach both teams but if MS Dhoni plays from one side, he cannot be the mentor of the other. I think he can be the mentor of both teams.”
“There is a simple rule which needs to be followed, if you want to associate yourself as an Indian player, you will have to snap all your ties with the BCCI. You have taken retirement from international cricket, so there is no issue there, but you will also have to bid goodbye to playing in the IPL,” Aakash Chopra added.

Aakash Chopra goes on to add how he feels that the upcoming T20 league from Cricket South Africa will look to gain a lot of the viewership from India. The commentator reasoned by stating that all the six teams in CSA’s T20 league have been bought by IPL franchises. He claims how IPL teams are looking to expand which will result in the CSA league getting viewership from the sub continent.
He said, “The way the IPL teams are expanding, that’s a beautiful story. In the CSA league, there are six teams and all have Indian owners. Lucknow Super Giants, Chennai Super Kings, Mumbai Indians, Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Capitals and Sunrisers Hyderabad – all have teams there.”
“Even though the formula is four overseas players and seven local players but all the stakeholders of the league are Indians. You are expecting a lot of revenue to come from India. So India is actually now going to call the shots in the CSA league as well,” Aakash Chopra added.
