Aakash Chopra has shared his thoughts on Virat Kohl’s batting, speaking how the Asia Cup 2022 is a perfect opportunity for the 33-year-old batter to bat freely in the upcoming games. The former Indian skipper has struggled with the bat over the last two years. Kohli’s last international century came in 2019 when he featured against Bangladesh. Despite scoring fifties across formats, Kohli’s batting seems to have taken a turn for the worse in 2022.
Former India opener feels that the current batting approach taken by the Men in Blue does not anticipate a player like Kohli to score many runs. Aakash Chopra goes on to share how the system requires the batter to just show up and his bit.
“I am not sure how Virat is feeling or how the team is feeling, but as a watcher, I have decreased my expectations. The reason is that no one on this team, in my opinion, would play for a hundred. Whether it is Rohit Sharma or KL Rahul, they both start swinging the bat as soon as they reach 50,” Aakash Chopra said.
He added, “You want to travel there if 220 is feasible. Do not be content with 210, 190, or 180. A player is given the freedom to play freely if the team bats with that mentality. If so, I will not be evaluating a player based on statistics.”
Aakash Chopra further claimed that, “It is the ideal situation. Given the kind of cricket India is currently playing, the squad does not anticipate Kohli to score 70 or 100 runs or to complete the match. It is more than enough if you just come and play your bit.”
