Former India opener Aakash Chopra has shared his thoughts on various players who have been included in the Indian team ahead of the upcoming T20I series against Australia and South Africa. The Men in Blue are set to square off against the above-mentioned team before the highly anticipated ICC T20 World Cup, which is set to be played in Australia, starting in October.
He feels that the upcoming white ball series will speak on the Indian team managements’ decision and their intentions with all-rounder Deepak Hooda. The 27-year-old broke into the national team set up after a stellar performance in the Indian Premier League 2022. He went on to do well on the opportunities presented which earned him a place in the squad for the 2022 T20 World Cup.
Hooda has also gone on to establish himself as a solid no 3 option in the shortest format of the game after he did well against Sri Lanka and backed it up with a century in T20Is. However, he failed to get going when asked to bat in the lower-middle order and was only used to bowl six overs since his debut despite being an all-rounder.
Speaking on Hooda, Aakash Chopra claimed how the upcoming six T20I matches before the ICC World Cup will reveal India’s plans for the player. The player turned commentator shared his opinions on his YouTube channel and stated, “Through these six matches, we will also get to know whether Deepak Hooda truly is in the scheme of things or if is he just there to warm the bench.”
The Former India batter also spoke on Umesh Yadav, who was drafted into the squad for the upcoming Australia T20Is as a replacement for Mohammed Shami. Aakash Chopra said, “Umesh Yadav was absolutely exceptional in the IPL, always struck with the new ball. Neither Shami nor Umesh played in a single match since the 2021 World Cup, now they are suddenly in the scheme of things with four weeks left for the World Cup.”

Rohit Sharma’s side will be heading into the world cup without Ravindra Jadeja, whose injury has ruled his out of the ICC event. Chopra feels that Jadeja’s absence will heavily impact the team combination. He said, “The balance of the team looked really good when Ravindra Jadeja was there. Whenever you needed a left-handed batter out there, you could promote him.”
“There is a bit of reluctance by the management to play Axar Patel as a like-to-like replacement for Jadeja. The upcoming two series will show how India intends to shape their playing XI and make their combination in Jadeja’s absence,” Aakash Chopra added.
