Every cricketing fan remembers the rise of Suryakumar Yadav in international cricket. Whenever I see him bat, I wonder if the BCCI almost destroyed someone with much more potential than several cricketers. It’s been just a year for Suryakumar Yadav in the squad, and he has already kicked Mohammad Rizwan to become the number one batsman in T20Is.
Indeed one of the finest cricketing players the world has ever witnessed, Surya is yet to debut in Test Cricket. Being one of the biggest fans, I wonder how brutal Suryakumar Yadav will be in red-ball cricket.
I hope you remember that stare in the IPL against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). Surya against Virat Kohli made it clear that he is here to achieve something and will do everything possible for BCCI to give him his deserved opportunity. The right-handed batter had played 38 games in his T20 internationals, where he had scored 1209 runs with 11 half-centuries and one century.
It was Mumbai Indians vs Royal Challengers Bangalore, MI got off to a slow start chasing 165, but Suryakumar Yadav made it possible for his team to come home despite wickets falling around him. His 79-ball 43 and his post-match ‘calm down, I got this’ gesture have become famous, but another memory from that game that has stuck with him is the stare-down between him and Kohli during his innings.
In an interview with Gaurav Kapur on his show ‘Breakfast With Champions,’ Surya stated, “I was focused on myself, like ‘boss, whatever happens, you cannot lose focus and have to win the match at any cost. The ball went to him, and he made that action from there, and it was very instinctive,” he added.
“I was chewing gum at that time, but inside, I was terrified. My heart was racing fast. He’s also not saying anything, I’m also not saying anything, and I just had a voice coming from inside telling myself, ‘bro, I’m falling on your feet, don’t say anything. It’s just a matter of 10 seconds, the new over will start, and he won’t be able to stare at me for long,'” Suryakumar Yadav revealed.

“He walked past me, and luckily I dropped my bat, which helped break the tension in that situation. I didn’t even look at him for the rest of the match. I just kept my eyes down and batted through. We never even spoke about the topic again,” he added.
That stare and confidence against Virat Kohli won our hearts and forced the BCCI to give him a much-deserved chance to debut for team India. Surya is 32, and I believe he will also represent India in the ODI World Cup. Looking at his fitness, I am assured SKY will reach more heights in future and dominate ODI and Test too.
