Manchester United and Manchester City are two incredibly big English football teams known for dominating different eras. United is considered one of the biggest and most prestigious football clubs ever. Manchester City, on the other hand, is relatively new when it comes to having achieved success, but it has arguably been one of, if not the most dominant, sides in recent times. This article talks about the 12 football players, both male and female, who have played for both Manchester United and Manchester City.

Peter Schmeichel

Peter Schmeichel was a Danish football player who played domestic football from 1981 to 2003. His most successful came while representing Manchester United, a club he represented from 1991 to 1999, and it was here that he made a name for himself as one of the best goalkeepers in the world. Schmeichel, however, did play for Manchester City for one season right before retiring. The player joined Manchester City ahead of the 2002/03 season and ended up representing them for one season, making 31 appearances for the club across all competitions.

Francesca Bentley

Players Who Played For Both Manchester United And Manchester City

Francesca Bentley is an English goalkeeper who has already played for the women’s teams of both Manchester City and Manchester United despite being just 23 years old. Bentley started her career in 2010 with Manchester United’s youth academy. She moved to City’s youth academy in 2015 and was promoted to the first team in the 2017/18 season. However, before the player could make even one appearance, she was re-signed by Manchester United ahead of the 2018/19 season. Bentley spent nearly her entire stint at United while on loan to various clubs like Sheffield United, Blackburn Rovers, and Bristol City and eventually joined Bristol City in 2022.

Andy Cole

Andy Cole was an English striker who, while known for his time at Manchester United, also played for their rivals, Manchester City. He played for various clubs, including Arsenal and Newcastle United, before being signed by Manchester United ahead of the 1995/96 season. He made 275 appearances for the Red Devils across all competitions before deciding to leave the club in 2002. The player played for Blackburn Rovers and Fulham after leaving United, and it was after this that Manchester City decided to sign him. City signed him in 2005, and Cole made 23 appearances for them, representing them in one season before moving on.

Terry Cooke

Terry Cooke was an English professional footballer who played as a midfielder throughout his career. He actually started his career by joining the youth academy of Manchester United and was promoted to the first team after just one season. Cooke ended up playing for the Red Devils from 1994 to 1999, but spent a lot of his time on loans to other clubs. The player was actually on loan at Manchester City in 1999, and the Cityzens decided to sign him on a permanent basis, completing the transfer ahead of the 1999/00 season. Terry Cooke ended up making five appearances for Manchester United and 34 appearances for Manchester City across all competitions.

Owen Hargreaves

Owen Hargreaves was a midfielder who spent the majority of his professional career playing for Bundesliga side, Bayern Munich. He spent most of his career playing for Bayern, and it was here that he made a name for himself. However, aside from Bayern, Hargreaves also played for both Manchester United and Manchester City. After leaving Bayern in 2007, the player joined Manchester United ahead of the 2007/08 season. He played for them till 2011 before leaving to join Manchester City, a club he represented for just one season before deciding to hand up his boots.

Andrei Kanchelski

Andrei Kanchelski was another professional football player who played for both Manchester United and Manchester City. Kanchelski joined Manchester United in 1991 after already playing for Zirka Kirovohrad, Dynamo Kyiv, and Shakhtar Donetsk. The player played for United for four seasons and made 161 appearances for the club across all competitions before leaving. He played for various clubs after leaving United, and it was while playing for Rangers that he saw himself being loaned to Manchester City, for whom he made 11 appearances across all competitions in the 2000/01 season.

Aoife Mannion

Aoife Mannion is an Irish professional defender and another footballer who has played for the women’s teams of both Manchester United and Manchester City. She played for Aston Villa and Birmingham City before being signed by Manchester City in 2019. She stayed with City from 2019 to 2021, but after only being able to make 11 appearances across all competitions in two seasons, the player decided to leave and join Manchester United. Mannion has since continued to play for Manchester United and has already made 55 appearances for the club across all competitions.

Abbie McManus

Abbie McManus was an English professional footballer who represented the women’s teams of both Manchester United and Manchester City in her career. She was promoted from Manchester City’s youth academy to the first team and played for the first team from 2009 to 2013. She left in 2013 to play for Sheffield United but ended up returning to City after just one season. This time, the player represented City from 2014 to 2019 before leaving to join local rivals, Manchester United, ahead of the 2019/20 season. McManus ended up making a total of 174 appearances for Manchester City and 25 appearances for Manchester United across all competitions.

Nikita Parris

Nikita Parris is an English professional footballer who has played as a forward throughout her career. She started her professional career while playing for Everton and, towards the end of her stint with Everton in 2015, was sent out on loan to Manchester City. The Cityzens, impressed with her performance, decided to sign the player on a permanent basis, and she ended up playing for the club from 2016 to 2019, making a total of 127 appearances for City across all competitions. She left and played for Olympique Lyon and Arsenal before moving to Manchester United in 2022. She played for United in two seasons and made a total of 57 appearances across all competitions before leaving to join Brighton.

Jane Ross

Jane Ross is a Scottish professional footballer who has played for both Manchester United and Manchester City. Ross played for a series of Scottish football teams, namely Paisley Saints Ladies, Glasgow City, and Vittsjo GIK before moving to Manchester City. She played for the Cityzens from 2015 to 2018, making 44 appearances in all competitions before moving to West Ham United. However, after just one season with West Ham, the player decided to sign for City’s local rivals, Manchester United. She played for them in the 2019/20 and 2020/21 seasons and made 34 appearances for them across all competitions before leaving to join Rangers.

Carlos Tevez

Carlos Tevez is one of the biggest names to have played for both Manchester United and Manchester City, and arguably the most controversial transfer between these two clubs. After impressive stints with Boca Juniors, Corinthians, and West Ham United, Manchester United decided to sign Tevez in 2007. However, after playing for them for just two seasons and making 99 appearances across all competitions, the player decided to move directly to rival club Manchester City. This enraged United fans, and Tevez ended up playing for City from 2009 to 2013, making 148 appearances for the club across all competitions before leaving.

Ella Toone

Ella Toone is another English professional footballer who has played for both sides of Manchester. She was actually a part of United’s youth academy from 2007 to 2013 before she joined the youth academy of Blackburn Rovers. The player was promoted to the first team in 2015 and played for them till 2017, while also playing for Manchester City from 2016 to 2018. However, she only made nine appearances for Manchester City across all competitions before she was signed by Manchester United in 2018. Toone has continued to play for Manchester United ever since, has represented them in seven seasons, and has made 188 appearances for the club across all competitions.
