Why Does ‘Umpire’s Call’ Exist In Cricket?

The “Umpire’s Call” is one of the most nuanced and debated components of the Decision Review System (DRS) in cricket. Designed to preserve the authority of the on-field umpire while integrating technology, this rule plays a critical role in close LBW (Leg Before Wicket) decisions. As the umpire cannot always be right and the data cannot always be accurate, the Umpire’s Call was introduced to strike a balance between traditional umpiring judgment and modern-day data accuracy. This article talks about the reason why the Umpire’s Call exists in cricket and the reason it is actually more beneficial than harmful to the game of cricket.

The Reason For ‘Umpire’s Call’ In Cricket

Before the Decision Review System (DRS) was introduced in 2008, all decisions in cricket were solely reliant on the on-field umpires. While umpires are highly skilled professionals, human error is inevitable, especially in fast-paced situations or marginal calls. The DRS was introduced to help the umpires make their decisions correctly with impressive technologies like UltraEdge for catches and ball-tracking technology for LBWs. Ball tracking is based on a predictive model that calculates the likely path of the ball after it hits the batsman’s pad. It is a highly accurate model that is used for LBWs, but while it is highly accurate, it is not infallible.

There are three things to consider when taking care of an LBW. The first is where the ball has pitched. For an LBW to be considered out, the ball needs to be pitched either outside off or in line. If the ball is pitched outside the leg, it is automatically considered not out. The next thing to consider is impact. Only if the ball strikes the pad while being in line with the stumps can an LBW be considered to be valid. The final thing to consider is the wicket. If the ball had continued on its projected trajectory, would it have hit the wicket? Only if all conditions are fulfilled will the batsman be given out.

The Umpire’s Call was introduced to help balance the Umpire’s decision and the possible technology error. Ball-tracking is where the Umpire’s Call is used as a predictive model. The ball needs to conclusively achieve all three conditions for an on-field decision to be overturned. This means that more than 50% of the ball needs to be pitching either in line or outside off, more than 50% of the ball needs to be in line with the sumps during the point of impact, and more than 50% of the ball needs to be hitting the wicket for it to be called out. If these criteria are not met, then the on-field decision given by the umpire will stand.

While the umpire’s decision will stand if the call is deemed to be the Umpire’s Call, to overturn an out decision into a not-out, the evidence will need to prove without a doubt that the entire ball does not meet the criteria. The ball bowled by the bowler will need to either be completely pitching outside leg, hitting the pads completely outside the line of the stumps, or completely missing the wicket if their out decision is to be reversed to a not out. If any part of the ball is not completely out of the given conditions, the decision will be deemed to be the Umpire’s Call, and the batsman will remain out.

The core idea behind the Umpire’s Call is to respect the decision-making role of the on-field umpire, particularly in situations where the available technology cannot provide 100% certainty. Some prominent players, including Indian captain Virat Kohli and England’s Michael Vaughan, have publicly questioned its validity, arguing that if any part of the ball hits the stumps, the batsman should be declared out. However, for such a decision to be made, the technology would have to be 100% accurate, which is simply not possible as it is a predictive model, and it is because of this that the Umpire’s Call exists in cricket.
