While Barcelona’s youth academy, La Masia, is known for churning out some incredible talents, it cannot keep producing players to take up all the positions in a football team. Barcelona has made some very expensive transfers in its history to sign some incredible players. This article talks about the 10 most expensive signings in Barcelona’s history.

10. Dani Olmo – €60 Million

Dani Olmo is a Spanish professional footballer who transferred from RB Leipzig to Barcelona in the summer of 2024. He played with La Masia from 2007 to 2014 but was sold to Croatian side Dinamo Zagreb before he could make a single appearance for the Spanish club’s first team. Olmo performed very well for both Dinamo Zagreb and RB Leipzig and attracted the attention of his former employer, Barcelona. They decided to pay a transfer fee of €60 Million to sign the talented star, and he signed a six-year contract with Barcelona, joining them on 9th August 2024. He has continued to play for them ever since.

8. Ferran Torres – €65 Million

Ferran Torres first came into the spotlight while representing La Liga side Valencia. He graduated from Valencia’s youth academy and continued to shine for the first team. His performances caught the eye of Manchester City, who signed him in the summer of 2020. While he was impressive for the English side, he left Manchester City after just 1.5 seasons at the club. He signed with Barcelona on 28th December 2021 after the La Liga giants agreed to pay a transfer fee of around €65 Million to sign the Spanish star. Ferran Torres has continued to play for Barcelona since then and has made 140 appearances for them across all competitions.

8. Miralem Pjanic – €65 Million

Miralem Pjanic has played for multiple teams around the world, but arguably, the best periods of his career came when he played for Juventus and Barcelona. He joined Juventus in 2016 and represented them across four seasons, winning the Serie A title every year he played for Juventus while also winning the Copa Italia and Supercoppa Italiana titles. His performances in Italy caught the eye of the La Liga giants, and they decided to pay a transfer fee of €65 Million to sign him on 29th June 2020. However, his move to La Liga never panned out, and he represented Barcelona for just one season in his career, making a total of 30 appearances for them before leaving.

7. Zlatan Ibrahimovic – €69.5 Million

Zlatan Ibrahimovic is regarded as one of the best strikers of his generation and has played for some of the best clubs in the world, including the likes of Ajax, Juventus, Inter Milan, Barcelona, AC Milan, Paris Saint-Germain, and Manchester United. Ibrahimovic represented Inter Milan across three seasons and won three consecutive Serie A titles with them before La Liga giants Barcelona decided to sign him. The Spanish club decided to pay a transfer fee of €69.5 Million to sign the Swedish striker in July 2009. Ibrahimovic ended up playing for Barcelona in just one La Liga season before leaving to join AC Milan.

6. Luis Suarez – €82.3 Million

Luis Suarez is regarded as one of the best strikers of all time and completed the front three trio of ‘MSN’ which consisted of Lionel Messi, Neymar Jr, and Luis Suarez. He first came into the spotlight while playing for Eredivisie’s side Ajax, but it was at Liverpool that he started getting recognised as one of the best strikers in the world. He broke several goal-scoring records at Liverpool, and Barcelona decided to make a move for the Uruguayan star in the summer of 2014, paying a transfer fee of around €82.3 Million, which made him one of the most expensive players in Barcelona’s history. He ended up scoring 198 goals in 283 appearances for Barcelona.

5. Frenkie de Jong – €86 Million

Frenkie de Jong is another Barcelona star who was moulded by the Eredivisie side, Ajax, who are well reputed to develop some incredible stars. The Dutch midfielder started playing for Ajax’s first team in 2016 and had his breakthrough at the club in the 2018/19 season when he managed to help his team reach the semi-final of the UEFA Champions League. His performances in the midfield impressed many clubs around the world, but the Spanish club made the first move, paying a fee of €86 Million to sign him. Frenkie de Jong has continued to play for La Liga side Barcelona ever since and has developed into a brilliant midfielder.

4. Neymar Jr – €86.2 Million

Naymar Jr is regarded as one of the most talented youngsters the world has ever seen. He had his breakthrough in Santos, and it was a joy to watch him play football. It was clear that he would be an incredible player in the future, and while he attracted attention from multiple top clubs, Barcelona finally sealed the deal. Barcelona agreed to pay a fee of €86.2 Million to sign the talented winger from Santos on 24th May 2013. Neymar was part of one of the best-attacking trios ever, the ‘MSN, consisting of Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, and Neymar Jr. The Brazilian star stayed at Barcelona for four years and made a total of 186 appearances for them.

3. Antoine Griezmann – €120 Million

Antoine Griezmann is an extremely talented French attacker who had his breakthrough while playing for La Liga side Real Sociedad. He impressed some of the top clubs while playing for Sociedad, and Atletico Madrid decided to sign him. Griezmann played for Atletico Madrid from 2014 to 2019, developing into one of their most crucial players. However, Barcelona decided to trigger his very expensive release clause of €120 Million to sign the star from their opposition. Griezmann joined Barcelona on 12th July 2019 and represented the Spanish club for three seasons, making a total of 102 appearances for them across all competitions.

2. Ousmane Dembele – €148 Million

Ousmane Dembele made his senior football debut while playing for French club Rennes, but it was while playing for Borussia Dortmund that he really managed to impress some of the top clubs in the world. The French star showcased his skills and abilities while playing for the German club, and it was La Liga side Barcelona that decided to make the first move. They agreed on a deal with a total package worth €148 Million for the French winger and completed the transfer on 25th August 2017. Dembele stayed with the La Liga club for six seasons before leaving to join Paris Saint-Germain ahead of the 2023/24 season.

They reached an agreement with Liverpool to pay an initial fee of €120 Million with €40 Million in add-ons, taking the total transfer fee up to €160 Million. However, despite such a high transfer fee, the move did not end up panning out, and the Brazilian star ended up leaving Barcelona, having made just 106 appearances across four seasons.
