Manchester City are currently one of the biggest teams in the world. While they are having quite an abysmal 2024/25 season, especially considering their previous standards, they are still a force to be reckoned with. They have won various titles in recent times, including four consecutive Premier League titles and the prestigious UEFA Champions League title, a trophy which had always escaped them before. They have managed to build such a strong team only because of the transfers they have been able to make. 10. Kevin de Bruyne – £55 Million

Kevin de Bruyne is regarded as one of the best midfielders of his generation. He has insane passing skills and brilliant vision, which makes him a formidable player. He started out at Genk and first moved to Chelsea, but it was while playing for Werder Bremen and VfL Wolfsburg that he really started to impress. Manchester City decided to sign him and paid a fee of £55 Million to do so, making him one of the most expensive players in Manchester City’s history. The Belgian star has since continued to play for Manchester City and has become one of the most important players in their history.

9. Jeremy Doku – £55.5 Million

Jeremy Doku first started impressing with Belgian side Anderlecht. His performances caught the eye of Rennes, and they signed him ahead of the 2020/21 season. Doku played for them across four seasons before one of the biggest clubs in the world, Manchester City, came calling. He signed for the Premier League side on 24th August 2023 after the Cityzens agreed to pay a transfer fee of £55.5 Million. Doku is currently playing in his second season in the Premier League for Manchester City, and he hopes to live up to his high transfer fee and come good for the club in the future.

8. Aymeric Laporte – £57 Million

Aymeric Laporte showed incredible promise as a centre-back while playing for La Liga side Athletic Bilbao. He managed to become a first-team player for Bilbao, representing them across six seasons and making 222 appearances across all competitions. The Spanish defender really impressed Manchester City, who decided to pay his release clause of £57 Million to bring him to England, which was a record-breaking figure for both clubs. Laporte represented Manchester City across seven seasons and made 180 appearances for them in all competitions before leaving ahead of the 2023/24 season.

6. Riyad Mahrez – £60 Million

Riyad Mahrez first came into the limelight when he started performing incredibly well for the English Premier League side Leicester City. He was a part of the historic Leicester City side, which won the 2015/16 Premier League title. In fact, he was one of their most important players, with Riyad Mahrez and Jamie Vardy forming the heart of Leicester City’s attack. Manchester City decided to sign him ahead of the 2018/19 season and paid a massive fee of £60 Million to do so, making him one of their most expensive transfers of all time. Mahrez played for five seasons for Manchester City before leaving to join Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli.

6. Joao Cancelo – £60 Million

Joao Cancelo became one of the most expensive players in Manchester City’s history when they signed him from Juventus ahead of the 2019/20 season. Juventus and Manchester City agreed to a trade which saw Cancelo join City while Brazilian defender Danilo joined Juventus as part of the exchange alongside £27.4 Million over and above. This made the total deal worth £60 Million, making him the most expensive right-back. The Portuguese star represented Manchester City across four seasons. He also spent some time on loan at Bayern Munich and Barcelona before leaving to join Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal ahead of the 2024/25 season.

5. Rodri – £62.6 Million

Rodri is currently regarded as the best defensive midfielder in the world. In fact, he recently won the 2024 Ballon d’Or award, proving his worth as one of the best players in the world. Rodri first rose to prominence while playing for Villarreal and Atletico Madrid, but it was at Manchester City that he developed into one of the best players in the world. Manchester City signed the talented star on 3rd July 2019, paying his release clause of £62.6 Million to bring him to the club. The Spanish midfielder has since continued to play for the Cityzens and has won various prestigious trophies for them, like the Premier League and the UEFA Champions League.

4. Omar Marmoush – £63 Million

Omar Marmoush is one of Manchester City’s most recent acquisitions and one of their most expensive ones. The talented Egyptian star managed to impress the world while playing for  Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt, and Manchester City decided to make the first move and sign the player. They paid a base fee of £59 Million for him with possible add-ons worth £4 Million, taking the total to £63 Million. They completed the transfer of Marmoush on 23rd January 2025, and he made his debut for them just two days later. It will be interesting to see how he performs and develops for the Cityzens in the future.

3. Ruben Dias – £65 Million

Ruben Dias became one of the most expensive defenders in the world when Manchester City decided to pay a fee of £65 Million to sign him from the Portuguese side of Benfica. The defender became an incredible player for Benfica, and Manchester City decided to sign him on a six-year contract on 29th September 2020. Dias has since continued to represent Manchester City in the Premier League and has developed into one of their most important players. He has represented them across five seasons and has currently made 202 appearances for them across various competitions while winning multiple prestigious trophies with them.

2. Josko Gvardiol – £77.6 Million

Josko Gvardiol was made the second-most expensive defender in the world when Manchester City signed him on 5th August 2023 in a deal worth around £77.6 Million. Gvardiol instantly became one of their starters and has developed into one of their most crucial players. He is playing in only his second season with them, but he has already made 79 appearances for them across all competitions. He is currently the second-most expensive player in Manchester City’s history, and he hopes that he can live up to such a huge price tag by performing well for them for many years to come.
