The Indian government is actively pursuing stricter regulation of online gaming, gambling, betting, and lottery activities due to growing concerns about fraud, cyber-security risks, and potential harm to consumers. This decision is being spearheaded by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), which aims to establish a comprehensive legal framework that ensures transparency and protects consumers engaging in online gaming and betting. While there has been no official confirmation from the Ministry of Home Affairs on the timeline for the proposed law, most people believe that it is only a matter of time before these laws come into effect.
It has been reported that several senior officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs recently held a meeting with representatives from various agencies, such as the Intelligence Bureau. To decide whether new regulations would be required to look over the online gaming and betting industry, the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) will research and write a report evaluating the necessity of new legislation. Only after this report has been compiled and thoroughly discussed will a final decision be made based on the findings of the I4C report. This report will inform future regulatory measures and suggestions as to which further regulations are necessary.

It has also been reported that the Indian Government aims to add laws that will make celebrities endorsing illegal gambling platforms face accountability for their actions in a bid to prevent such websites from getting media attention. Some gaming applications and such online websites request access to system files, posing a risk of hacking. Sharing further personal information in gaming chats on these websites can further increase the risk of these scams. To reduce these risks, the Indian government is considering implementing strong legal safeguards to enhance data security and ensure user protection.
The Indian government has several concerns regarding the online gaming and betting industry. These include fraudulent practices such as manipulated gaming outcomes, financial fraud, money laundering, and unauthorised data access. All of these can cause severe problems, which is why the Indian government has decided to crack down on illegal websites and introduce new laws to help regulate the industry better. Offshore gambling applications are being scrutinised for misleading advertisements and unauthorised financial transactions, all of which the Indian government plans on severely hampering once the new regulations are decided.
The current online gaming regulations fall under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) through the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021. These will continue to stay in effect in the near future as no official confirmation or timeline has been provided. No one knows when the I4C will finish their report and present their findings to the Indian Government. The only certain thing is that once this report is completed, new regulations will be added based on the I4C report, which will help crack down on illegal websites and further keep the data and consumer information.
