Steve Smith is the latest player to have crossed the 10,000-run mark in Test cricket. He did so in the game against Sri Lanka on 29th January 2025. Steve Smith has represented the Australian cricket team from 2010 all the way to the present day. In this time, he has managed to score 10103 runs in 115 matches at an average of 56.44 and a strike rate of 53.57. He scored 35 centuries and 41 fifties in his Test career, with his highest-ever score being 239 runs, which came against England in December 2017.
Younis Khan is a Pakistani professional cricketer who represented his country from 2000 to 2017. He participated in 118 Test matches for his country and scored 10099 runs at an average of 52.05 and a strike rate of 52.12. Khan scored 34 centuries and 33 fifties during his career, with his highest score of 313 coming against Sri Lanka in February 2009.

Sunil Gavaskar is regarded as one of the best Test cricketers the Indian cricket team has ever seen. He represented his country in the Test format from 1971 to 1987, participating in 125 matches in the process. Gavaskar scored a total of 10122 runs during his career at an average of 51.12 and a strike rate of 43.35. He ended his international career having scored 34 centuries and 45 fifties, with his high score being 236, which came in a game against West Indies in December 1983.
Steve Waugh scored a total of 10927 runs for the Australian cricket team in the Test format during his career. He did this at an average of 51.06 and a strike rate of 48.64. He represented his country from 1985 to 2004, participating in a total of 168 Test matches. Waugh’s highest score, 200, came when he managed to score a double century against the West Indies cricket team in 1995.
Allan Border is a highly decorated Australian cricketer who was widely regarded as one of the best Test players of all time. He played for the Australian cricket team from 1978 to 1994, playing in 156 matches in the process. Border scored a total of 11174 runs in his international career at an average of 50.56 and a strike rate of 41.09. Allan Border scored his highest score ever, 205, against the New Zealand cricket team in December 1987.

Mahela Jayawardene played for the Sri Lankan cricket team from 1997 to 2014. He played in 149 matches for his country and scored 11814 runs at an average of 49.84 and a strike rate of 51.45. He ended his career having scored 34 hundreds and 50 fifties, with his best performance coming when he scored 374 against the South African cricket team in July 2006.
Shivnarine Chanderpaul, regarded as one of the best West Indian cricketers of all time, represented his country from 1994 to 2015. He played a total of 164 matches for them and scored 11867 runs at an average of 51.37 and a strike rate of 43.31. He scored a total of 30 centuries and 66 fifties for the West Indies cricket team, with his high score of 203 coming against the South African cricket team in 2005.

Kumar Sangakkara represented the Sri Lankan cricket team from 2000 to 2015. He played 134 Test matches in his career, scoring 12400 runs at an average of 57.40 and a strike rate of 54.19. He finished his international test career at 38 hundreds and 52 fifties. Sangakkara’s highest-ever score was 319, which came in a game against the Bangladesh cricket team in February 2014.
Alastair Cook is regarded as one of the England team’s best cricketers of all time. He was absolutely phenomenal, especially in the game’s test format. Cook played for the England cricket team from 2006 to 2018, playing a total of 161 Test games. He scored 12472 runs in his Test career at an average of 45.35 and a strike rate of 46.95. He scored a total of 33 centuries and 57 half-centuries, with his highest-ever score of 294 coming against the Indian cricket team in August 2011.
Joe Root is the only player on this list apart from Steve Smith, who is still active. Root has been playing for the England cricket team since 2012 and has scored 12972 runs in 152 matches. He did this at an average of 50.87 and a strike rate of 57.47, ending his Test career having scored 36 centuries and 65 fifties. Root’s high score in this format is 262, and he achieved this feat against the Pakistan cricket team in October 2024.

Sachin Tendulkar is the highest Test run scorer of all time. The Indian cricketer is regarded as the ‘God of Cricket’, and many people around the world consider him to be the best cricketer to have ever lived. Tendulkar played for the Indian team from 1989 to 2013 and participated in 200 Test matches for them. He scored a total of 15921 runs at an average of 53.78 and a strike rate of 54.04.
