Lalit Yadav left India in 2010, and while everyone speculated that this came due to legal issues, Lalit Modi revealed in his latest interview that he left the country not because of any legal issues but because he was getting death threats from Dawood Ibrahim.
Lalit Modi said:
“I did leave the country when there was a death threat to me. There was no legal case to start with. Dawood Ibrahim made the threat to me first after IPL-1 because I was also anti-corruption. I didn’t allow any. I was a very strict anti-corruption commissioner. Betting is huge, it’s a $2 billion game. Betting is illegal today and was illegal at that time. The books are controlled by Dawood Ibrahim. I didn’t know this initially. I took a very strict stand, and I became the target.”

“In the three years of my tenure, there was not one incident of corruption, not one controversy of fixing. Himanshu Roy, Deputy Commissioner of Police, was there. He told me, ‘Lalit, we cannot protect you anymore. We’ve been given orders by the Centre. There will be a hit on you, and we can only protect you for the next 12 hours.”
“My personal bodyguard on the plane told me to use the back entrance at the airport. I had VIP credentials of also being an honorary Consul General of a country. So I could go through immigration without going through the police check, which is what I did. And I was allowed to board the aircraft. By that time, there was not a single case against me. I was not a fugitive, but there was a threat to my life.”

Another topic Lalit Modi spoke about was Shahrukh Khan wanting to get his hands on the Mumbai Indians before going for the Kolkata Knight Riders. He said he was school friends with the actor and went on to say that his first choice was Mumbai, but Mukesh Ambani took it, which is why Kolkata Knight Riders became his eventual pick. However, he said that Shahrukh Khan’s involvement in making cricket entertaining was huge and called him the number-one pillar of the Indian Premier League.
Another key takeaway from Lalit Modi’s interview was Shashi Tharoor’s involvement with Indian Premier League team Kochi Tuskers Kerala. Reportedly, Lalit Modi was forced to sign documents granting a 25% ownership stake in the Kochi team of IPL to Sunanda Pushkar, the late wife of Shashi Tharoor, despite no financial contribution from her side. He claimed that Sunanda Pushkar had zero contribution in the $50 Million consortium; however, she owned 25% of the team and was getting 15% for every dollar of revenue, coming in as a “marketing genius.”
Lalit Yadav refused to sign these papers but allegedly soon received a call from Shashi Tharoor, who threatened him not to ask any questions about Sunanda Pushkar and that if he did, Lalit Modi would be raided by the ED and jailed by the income tax department. Lalit Modi eventually agreed to sign the documents, and he says that any proof, if needed, will be available in the meeting minutes.
