Ruud van Nistelrooy retired from football after the 2011/12 season with Spanish football club Malaga. After hanging up his boots, he realised he could not stay away from the football world for too long, and on 22nd June 2013, van Nistelrooy joined PSV as a coaching intern working with the under-17s. In March 2014, it was announced that Ruud van Nistelrooy would be assisting Gus Hiddink after the 2014 FIFA World Cup, and he joined the Netherlands men’s national football team.

The Dutch star returned to PSV and was revealed as the new striker coach of the under-17s, 19s and the reserve team in February 2016. He continued to coach them, and after proving his worth as a coach, on 25th June 2018, Ruud van Nistelrooy became the new manager of the PSV under-19s, taking over Mark van Bommel, who left his role for the senior team. While he continued to act in this role, in December 2019, it was revealed that van Nistelrooy would also be added to Ronald Koeman’s Netherlands backroom staff as an assistant manager together with Maarten Stekelenburg ahead of the Euro 2020 after Kees van Wonderen recently had left the position.

After learning under some great managers, it was clear that Ruud van Nistelrooy was ready to take over as first-team manager. In March 2022, the very thing that the Dutchman was working towards came true. Ruud van Nistelrooy was appointed as the replacement manager for the outgoing Roger Schmidt as PSV’s head coach. He signed a three-year contract with the club, joining them from the 2022/23 season onwards, making this his first stint as a manager.

Despite winning the 2022 Johan Cruyff Shield and the 2022/23 KNVB Cup, he resigned with one match remaining in the 2022/23 Eredivisie season, stating his reason as a lack of support. After a little break, van Nistelrooy was appointed as an assistant coach for Premier League club Manchester United on a two-year contract on 11th July 2024. He worked with Erik Ten Hag as the assistant coach until Ten Hag was sacked by the club on 28th October that year.

In a surprising turn of events, it was Ruud van Nistelrooy who was appointed as the interim manager while Manchester United continued their search for a permanent replacement for Erik Ten Hag. While van Nistelrooy always knew his time at the club was limited, this was an amazing opportunity for him to show his worth to the rest of the world, and he was not going to let it pass. Ruud van Nistelrooy was in charge of United for four games: two in the Premier League, one in the UEFA Europa League, and one in the EFL Cup.

Manchester United thrived under Ruud van Nistelrooy’s management, winning three of their four games. The only game they did not win was a Premier League game against Chelsea, which ended in a draw. After this incredible display with the club, van Nistelrooy parted ways with Manchester United once Ruben Amorim took over as the head coach of the Red Devils.
