India had one of the worst test match displays in history of the format against New Zealand on 17th October 2024. The batting lineup simply crumbled in front of their eyes as batsmen fell one after the other like dominoes. Exceptional bowling by Matt Henry, William ORourke, and Tim Southee put the pressure on the Indian team. They ended up getting all out for just 46 runs, which is the India’s lowest ever total in a home test.

India found themselves in an extremely precarious situation after losing many wickets in quick succession. They found themselves being 34-6 at Lunch, an incredibly terrible position. Rishabh Pant’s 20 runs and Yashasvi Jaiswal’s 13 runs ended up being the top scores for the team. Rohit Sharma made two runs while five of the other batsmen in the lineup lost their wickets without scoring a single run.

Virat Kohli, Sarfaraz Khan, KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja, and Ravichandran Ashwin all lost their wickets on a ducks. It is extremely shocking when the highest score of the entire team is 20 in any format, let alone Test cricket. This is an inning the country will want to forget soon. However, the home team have an extremely good bowling lineup so all is not lost yet. It will be interesting to see if they can fight and comeback in the game.

This is also the shortest ever total in Asia, with India breaking the record which was jointly held by West Indies for their 53 runs against Pakistan at Faisalabad in 1986 and 53 runs by Pakistan against Australia at Sharjah in 2002. 46 runs is the lowest score in a Test played in India by quite a margin. The other lowest scores are:

  • 46 – IND vs NZ, Bengaluru, 2024
  • 62 – NZ v IND, Mumbai, 2021
  • 75 – IND v WI, Delhi, 1987
  • 76 – IND v SA, Ahmedabad, 2008
  • 79 – SA v IND, Nagpur, 2015

Despite the setback in fist inning against New Zealand, India should remain confident in their abilities in Test cricket. They have transformed into a force to be reckoned with and are one if the best Test teams in the world. One setback or bad day does not mean the team should be too hard on themselves. Their goal remains the same, to qualify for and win the World Test Championship (WTC) title.

This title has eluded them for quite a while now. There have been two editions already and India have qualified for the final on both occasions but lost both times. Their first loss in the tournament came against New Zealand, who won the inaugural tournament. Their second and most recent loss came against Australia. It is India and Australia who will most likely end up playing the final again and if that does end up happening the country will surely be thirsty to extract their revenge and win the World Test Championship title for the first time in history.
