The Indian Premier League (IPL) is about to conduct yet another mega auction ahead of the 2025 season. The last mega auction occurred ahead of the 2022 season when team configurations changed massively. A similar auction is scheduled ahead of the 2025 tournament. The rules have been released, with each team being allowed to retain up to six players, including a maximum of five capped players and two uncapped players. The price range for these five years is set at ₹18, ₹14, ₹11, ₹18, and ₹14 Crore in that order. The cost of retaining an uncapped player is set at ₹4 Crore. This article talks about which players are likely to be retained by each of the franchises.

Mumbai Indians have a huge dilemma ahead of the IPL 2025 auction, and everyone has the same question on their mind. Will Mumbai Indians retain Rohit Sharma? After Hardik Pandya was appointed as captain last year, many reports emerged saying that he would leave MI ahead of the IPL 2025 auction. We believe this will indeed happen, and the franchise will choose to retain Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah, Suryakumar Yadav, and Nehal Wadhera (uncapped) and use their RTM cards to try and sign two of Ishan Kishan, Tilak Verma, and Nuwan Thushara.

Royal Challengers Bangalore will surely retain Virat Kohli and Cameron Green as their first two retentions. Their third retention pick, however, can be between both Will Jacks and Rajat Patidar. This decision will be based on who RCB think will be easier to get using an RTM card. We think they will lean towards making Will Jacks their third pick. Alongside these three, Yash Dayal will most likely be picked as the uncapped player, while the franchise will try to sign two of Rajat Patidar, Mohammed Siraj, and Mahipal Lomror.
MS DHONI CAN BE RETAINED AT 4CR. 🤯

Chennai Super Kings have gotten a huge boost as the uncapped rule makes a return. Any player who has not played a game for the Indian cricket team in the last five years will be considered an uncapped player and can be bought accordingly. This means CSK can use their uncapped slot to retain Mahendra Singh Dhoni and use their first three retention picks to retain Ruturaj Gaikwad, Matheesha Pathirana, and Shivam Dube. These picks will likely be followed by them trying to use their RTM cards on the likes of Ravindra Jadeja, Deepak Chahar, and Rachin Ravindra.

Kolkata Knight Riders won the IPL last year and naturally have a huge pool to choose from while deciding whom to retain. They will surely retain the IPL-winning captain, Shreyas Iyer, and will likely also use their retentions on Andre Russell and Sunil Narine while picking up Angkrish Raghuvanshi as an uncapped player. While they may choose to retain more players, we feel they will retain these three along with an uncapped player and use their two RTMs to buy two of Varun Chakaravarthy, Harshit Rana, and Rinku Singh.
SRH's target retention list for the IPL 2025 mega auction 🟠⚡

Sunrisers Hyderabad have many players who they would love to retain, but we believe, like most other teams, they will retain just three players. It is likely their first two retentions will be Pat Cummins and Travis Head. The third choice is between Abhishek Sharma and Heinrich Klaasen, and we believe that as Sharma is Indian and can become an all-rounder, he will be retained ahead of the IPL 2025 season. SRH will use their uncapped player spot to sign Nitish Kumar Reddy and try to use their RTM cards to sign two of Heinrich Klaasen, Rahul Tripathi, and Shahbaz Ahmed.

Rajasthan Royals have a plethora of players to pick from to retain and RTM, but it is likely that they will retain just three and try to get the rest back in the actual auction. Their three retentions will surely be Sanju Samson, Jo Buttler, and Yashasvi Jaiswal, with Sandeep Sharma as their uncapped player. They will use their RTMs to try and get back the likes of Riyan Parag, Yuzvendra Chahal, Dhruv Jurel, and Trent Boult ahead of the IPL 2025 season.

Delhi Capital is another team that, despite not performing too well, has many players to choose from ahead of the IPL 2025 auction. While Kuldeep Yadav has been a very important player for them, we believe the franchise will not retain him. They will choose to retain Rishabh Pant, Axar Patel, and Tristan Stubbs while using their uncapped slot on Abishek Porel and saving their RTM cards to try and bring back the likes of Kuldeep Yadav, Jake Fraser-McGurk, and David Warner.

We believe Punjab Kings will be the only team to retain less than three players ahead of the IPL 2025 auction. While they opt to retain the same number of players as the other teams, their combination will be a little different. They will use two retentions to retain Sam Curran and Arshdeep Singh while using both of their uncapped player slots to sign Shashank Singh and Ashutosh Sharma. This will leave them with two RTM cards to try and sign Kagiso Rabada, Harshal Patel, or Liam Livingstone.

Gujarat Titans will use three retentions like most of the other teams ahead of the IPL 2025 auction. They will ideally retain Shubman Gill, Rashid Khan, and Mohammed Shami while using their uncapped player slot on Shahrukh Khan. This will leave them with two RTM cards, which they will look to use to try and sign Sai Sudharsan, David Miller, and Mohit Sharma. It will be very interesting to see which of these players ends up at Gujarat Titans after the auction.

Lucknow Super Giants have some very strong players it can choose from while deciding who to retain ahead of the 2025 season of IPL. They will most likely retain three players and one uncapped player and choose to save two RTM cards. LSG will retain KL Rahul, Nicholas Pooran, and Marcus Stoinis while using their uncapped slot to retain Ayush Badoni ahead of IPL 2025. The three players they will ideally try to use their RTM cards on are Naveen-ul-Haq, Ravi Bishnoi, and Mayank Yadav.
