Mashal Sports and Disney Star established the Pro Kabaddi League (PKL), an Indian professional kabaddi league, in 2014. The Indian Premier League (IPL) and the kabaddi competition at the 2006 Asian Games served as major inspiration for the PKL, which transformed the sport and elevated it to a popular and aspirational activity for both players and spectators.

The league is structured on a franchise system, featuring teams from different Indian towns. The PKL, which began with eight clubs and has now grown to twelve, is the most geographically represented kabaddi league. Puneri Paltan, who won their first championship in the 2023–24 season, are the current champions.
