He made outstanding contributions to the Club as a cricketer, and as a man, and he will be so sorely missed.”
Steve Elworthy, CEO at Surrey CCC, also spoke about Graham Thorpe. He said:

Our thoughts and condolences are with Graham’s family and friends, to whom we will offer any support that we are able to. We ask that everyone respects the privacy of the family at this incredibly difficult time.”

One user on twitter paid tribute the legend and recollected how his first bat was a Kookaburra because the legendary Graham Thorpe, also known as ‘Thorpey’ had one.
Ageing is just watching your heroes pass away but this one especially hurts.
Graham Thorpe was often the lone light of brilliance for England cricket fan's in the 90s Right from his debut century vs Aus I loved him.

Fans around the world started recollecting the memories they had of the wonderful batsman from back in the 90s:
RIP Graham Thorpe
One of my favourite players. Saw him score a magnificent 100 v Aussies at Edgbaston in 1997.

Such a moving, vital piece from @Athersmike but it shouldn’t be on the sports pages. More people should read it. Graham Thorpe was so afflicted by depression he took his own life. As his widow says: ‘There is nothing to hide, it is not a stigma.’ https://t.co/hIWdZ3bcfe pic.twitter.com/x0qmqCqKvm

In an interview with The Times, Graham Thorpe’s wife, Amanda Thorpe, revealed that mental illness caused the former cricketer to take his own life. She went on to explain what Thorpe was struggling with and why he felt the need to take such a drastic step. She said:
“For the past couple of years, Graham had been suffering from major depression and anxiety. This led him to make a serious attempt on his life in May 2022, which resulted in a prolonged stay in an intensive care unit. Despite glimpses of hope and of the old Graham, he continued to suffer from depression and anxiety, which at times got very severe. We supported him as a family and he tried many, many treatments but unfortunately none of them really seemed to work. Graham was renowned as someone who was very mentally strong on the field and he was in good physical health. But mental illness is a real disease and can affect anyone.”
It is heartbreaking to learn Graham Thorpe took his own life following a long battle with depression and anxiety.

“Despite having a wife and two daughters whom he loved and who loved him, he did not get better. He was so unwell in recent times and he really did believe that we would be better off without him and we are devastated that he acted on that and took his own life.”
“We are not ashamed of talking about it. There is nothing to hide and it is not a stigma. We were trying to help him get better before and trying to protect him, which is why we said nothing. This is the time now to share the news, however horrible it is. We’ve wanted to be able to talk and share and we’d now like to raise awareness, too.”
