Mumbai Indians took this chance and purchased him for ₹1.6 Crore in the mega auction. He ended up picking nine wickets for them in eight games but was released by the franchise after just one year.

Rajasthan Royals acquired Murugan Ashwin for just ₹20 Lakh ahead of IPL 2023. This was the sixth Indian Premier League franchise the spinner played for. He played two games for Rajasthan Royals, bowling four overs in total, but was unable to pick up any wickets. This was the last time Murugan Ashwin played in the Indian Premier League.
