IPL 2025 Mega Auction: Retentions, RTMs, And Other Rules

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had called a meeting of all Indian Premier League (IPL) team owners. This meeting is scheduled to take place on 31st July. The correspondence regarding the meeting was reportedly sent by the CEO of IPL, Hemang Amin. The meeting is expected to be attended by all the IPL team owners, along with BCCI president Roger Binny and BCCI secretary Jay Shah. While the exact agenda of the meeting had not been revealed, it was assumed that this meeting would discuss the specifications of the IPL 2025 auction, the future of the league, and how they want to move forward regarding the Indian Premier League.

This meeting was originally supposed to be held in April but was postponed. According to reports, the major reason for the meeting to be pushed was that certain franchises reacted very strongly against increasing the number of retentions. Apparently, some franchises want only one retention to be allowed per team. They are in favour of bringing back the Right-to-Match (RTM) option instead of increasing the number of retentions. The new date has been set as 31st July 2024 to decide how many retentions will be allowed and if RTM will be reintroduced.

How Many Retentions Will Be Allowed In The IPL 2025 Mega Auctions?

The meeting to discuss IPL retentions will take place on 31st July. One of the main points of discussion at the meeting will be how many retentions will be allowed in the upcoming mega auction. The team owners have always had varying opinions on this. Some want IPL to increase the number of retentions to as many as eight so that franchises can build a stable, future-proof team and players can develop long associations with the franchises, some want a very basic number of retentions to be allowed.

The opposing view thinks that players going to new franchises and the chance for the franchise to build new teams with almost all new players will excite the fans even more, and this is something that should be done in the upcoming mega auction. Both points have good reasoning and it will be interesting to see which side the IPL leans towards when they eventually make the decision.

While lesser retention will make things more interesting, it is impossible to build a big franchise with long-term players who can act as the face of the franchise if most of the team is changed regularly. While both views are valid, it is likely that the Indian Premier League 2025 auctions will see a smaller number of retentions per team allowed. It is expected that around three retentions per team will be allowed. According to news which has been circulating, there will be 5-6 retentions allowed ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction. Teams may also be allowed to retain uncapped players in an additional slot. It is also reported that the total purse per team may be increased.

Will RTM’s Make A Return In The IPL 2025 Mega Auction?

Another point which needs to be discussed alongside retentions is the Right to Match card (RTM). An RTM allows a franchise to pay the player’s final bid price and get the player back to their team. This is something that has been used in the past but was missing during the last mega auction that took place in 2022. It will be interesting to see if the RTM card makes a return in the IPL 2025 mega auction. Another thing which will be discusses is the impact player rule. This rule will mostly continue to remain in IPL 2025.

While this has been used in the past, the RTM card is expected not to be reintroduced. IPL seems to consider that something that has already been tried, and everyone has moved on since. Another reason for this is that BCCI wants to make the IPL 2025 auctions one of the biggest auctions ever and wants all teams to be built almost from scratch. While  it is likely that 5-6 retentions will be allowed and RTM will not be reintroduced, it will still be debated at the meeting which will take place on 31st July 2024. There is a chance that one RTM per team is provided.

IPL 2025 Mega Auction Date:

The exact date of the mega auction has not yet been revealed. However, it is speculated that the IPL 2025 mega auction date will be set somewhere between December 2024 and February 2025. The most likely period for this auction to happen is somewhere in the last two weeks of December.

IPL 2025 Venue:

Not much has been decided about IPL 2025 except for the fact that there will be a mega auction that will take place. While the exact venues have not yet been confirmed, it can safely be assumed that the tournament will be held in India. Given the fact that IPL 2024 went ahead as normal despite Lok Sabha elections taking place, it can be expected that IPL 2025 will happen in the same stadiums. No changes have been mentioned for IPL 2025, and we can expect most, if not all, stadiums to remain the same.
