The 17th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) will start on 22nd March 2024. The Orange and Purple caps are two revered awards presented to the highest run scorer and highest wicket-taker at the end of the IPL season. Harshal Patel holds the record for the most wickets taken in a single IPL season. He picked up 32 wickets for Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2021. This list talks about some of the top contenders to win the purple cap in IPL 2024.

Jasprit Bumrah has never won the Purple Cap given to the highest wicket-taker in a single Indian Premier League season. While the bowler is widely regarded as one of the best bowlers ever, he has never won the Purple Cap. He has come close many times. He had good stints in the 2017, 2019, and 2021 IPL seasons, picking up 20, 19, and 21 wickets, respectively.
However, his best chance at winning the Purple Cap came in 2020. He picked up an impressive 27 wickets in just 15 matches at an economy of 6.73. However, his valiant effort was thwarted by Kagiso Rabada, who picked up 30 wickets. Bumrah will hope he can put an end to this record of having never won the Purple Cap and finally clinch the top wicket-taker award in IPL 2024.

Yuzvendra Chahal has been a very impressive wicket-taker, especially in the Indian Premier League. His best wicket-taking seasons came in 2015, 2016, and 2020, while he played for Royal Challengers Bangalore, and in 2022 when he played for Rajasthan Royals. Chahal picked up 23, 21 and 21 wickets in the 2015, 2016, and 2020 IPL seasons with RCB. However, his best wicket-taking season came in 2022 with Rajasthan Royals, where he ended up taking 27 wickets.
This was enough to help the Indian bowler win his first-ever Purple Cap. After an impressive showing in 2022, his 2023 season did not go as well as he wanted it to. He still ended up taking 21 wickets but was nowhere near the top wicket-takers. Yuzvendra Chahal will hope to improve on this and come back even better. He will surely try to double the number of Purple Caps to his name in IPL 2024.

Rashid Khan has been impressive in the Indian Premier League for quite some time now. He made his debut in the league in 2017 for Sunrisers Hyderabad. He picked up 17 wickets in his debut season, which is incidentally also the lowest number of wickets he has taken in a single season. The spinner has taken 139 wickets in 109 IPL matches at an average of 20.76 and a strike rate of 18.68.
His average economy in these 109 matches is an impressive 6.67. The closest Rashid Khan came to winning the Indian Premier League Purple Cap was in the 2023 season. He picked up 27 wickets but fell one wicket short of his teammate Mohammed Shami, who took home the purple cap with 28 wickets. Rashid Khan will hope to have a similar season in IPL 2024 and will try to make sure he takes home the Purple Cap this time.

Mitchell Starc last played in the IPL during the 2015 season. He has only ever participated in two seasons, i.e., 2014 and 2015. While he is renowned for his wicket-taking prowess, injuries, alongside many other reasons, have prevented him from participating in the Indian Premier League for a long time. The Australian pacer has decided to return to the league for IPL 2024.
Kolkata Knight Riders bought him in the auction for a whopping ₹24.75 Crore, making him the most expensive purchase in IPL history. Starc will hope to repay the team’s trust in him by having an outstanding IPL season. The bowler has 34 wickets in his IPL career, and he will try to significantly increase this stat and clinch the IPL 2024 Purple Cap.

While Kuldeep Yadav has been playing in the Indian Premier League since 2016, his appearances in a season have not always been consistent. He was used as a rotation player in 2019 and 2020. The spinner has picked up 71 wickets in 73 IPL games at an economy of 8.13. The Indian star averages 28.39 runs per wicket and 20.96 balls per wicket. Kuldeep Yadav will go into IPL 2024 with impressive form.
He has recently shined for Team India in international games, and he hopes to replicate this in the domestic tournament. Kuldeep Yadav has finished in the top five wicket-takers list in a season only once in his career. However, given his recent form and how he has changed his game, it will not be surprising if Kuldeep Yadav ends up taking the IPL 2024 Purple Cap home.

18.61- Mohammad Shami

Mohit Sharma had an impressive showing in the last Indian Premier League campaign. He played only 14 of the possible 17 games for Gujarat Titans but still came second in the list of top wicket-takers. He finished his season with 27 wickets, just one wicket shy of Mohammed Shami, who ended up winning the IPL 2023 Purple Cap. The Indian bowler’s style of bowling suits Gujarat Titans very well.
Gujarat Titan’s home ground is the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. This is quite a big stadium and has long boundaries. This suits Mohit Sharma, who tries to entice the batsmen in the death overs and gets them out. For this reason, it is very likely that Mohit Shara will do very well in IPL 2024 and can easily win the Purple Cap.
