Serie A was founded in 1898 and has been operating as a round-robin tournament since the 1929 – 30 season. Gianluigi Buffon has the most appearances in the tournament’s history. He has made 657 appearances. The top scorer of this tournament is Silvio Piola. He scored 274 goals in the Serie A.

Who Are The Top Scorers In The Serie A?

10. Alberto Gilardino (188 Goals)

Alberto Gilardino is an Italian striker who played for a plethora of Serie A clubs. In his career in this league, he represented Piacenza, Hellas Verona, Parma, AC Milan, Fiorentina, Genoa, Bologna, and Palermo. Gilardino made his first appearance in the league in 1999 and his final appearance in 2017. The striker played 514 league games and scored 188 goals. His most successful stint came at Parma, where he scored 50 goals in just 96 appearances.

10. Alessandro Del Piero (188 Goals)

Alessandro Del Piero played for only Juventus in his entire Serie A career. The Italian forward made 478 appearances in the the league and scored 188 goals. Del Piero showed his loyalty to the club when Juventus got relegated to Serie B due to the Calciopoli scandal. When they got relegated, Del Piero pledged that he would stay to captain the team. He told the players that they should remain with the team and that the fans deserved their support during this time. While many key players such as Fabio Cannavaro, Emerson, Gianluca Zambrotta, Patrick Vieira, Zlatan Ibrahimović, and Lilian Thuram left, Del Piero chose to stay and help the club gain promotion.

10. Giuseppe Signori (188 Goals)

Giuseppe Signori played in the Serie A from 1991 – 2004. The Italian star scored 188 goals in 344 appearances, ending his time in the Italian league with an impressive 0.55 goals per game ratio. Signori played for Foggia, Lazio, Sampdoria, and Bologna during his time in Serie A. However, his best run in the league came when he played for Lazio. The striker scored 107 goals in 152 appearances in the league.

9. Kurt Hamrin (190 Goals)

Kurt Hamrin was a Swedish forward. He started his professional career in the Swedish club AIK Fotboll. Hamrin moved to Serie A in 1956. He joined Juventus to kick off his Serie A career. The Swedish star played for Juventus, Padova, Fiorentina, AC Milan, and Napoli in the Serie A. Most of his time in Serie A came with Fiorentina. The forward made 289 appearances in the league for them, scoring 150 goals. He ended up scoring 190 Serie A goals in 400 appearances. After his stint with Napoli, the Swedish star decided to return home. He played for IFK Stockholm for one season before retiring from the beautiful game.

8. Ciro Immobile (200 Goals)

Ciro Immobile is the only player on this list who is still currently playing. The Italian striker has played for Juventus, Genoa, Torino, and Lazio in the Serie A. He played for Juventus from 2009 – 2012. He joined Genoa for a short stint in the 2012 – 13 season. He joined Torino immediately after for another brief stint in the 2013 – 14 season. He played for Torino once more in 2016 before joining Lazio permanently. The striker has been in Lazio ever since. Immobile has 200 goals in the Serie A in 341 appearances, a very impressive record.

7. Roberto Baggio (205 Goals)

Roberto Baggio is one of Italy’s biggest legends, and it comes as no surprise to see him on this list. During his time in the Serie A, Baggio played for Fiorentina, Juventus, AC Milan, Bologna, Inter Milan, and Brescia. The attacking midfielder scored 205 goals in 452 appearances in the league. His most notable stay in Serie A came with Juventus. Baggio made 141 appearances for them and scored 78 goals in the league.

6. Antonio Di Natale (209 Goals)

Antonio Di Natale is regarded as one of the best strikers to ever play for Italy. Di Natale played for just two Serie A clubs, Empoli and Udinese. He played for Empoli from 1996 – 2004. He scored 18 goals in 60 appearances in Serie A. He then moved to Udinese in 2004. The striker played from 2004 – 2016 for them, scoring 191 goals in 385 league appearances. This took his tally to 209 goals in Serie A in 445 appearances.

5. Jose Altafini (216 Goals)

Jose Altafini is the fifth-highest goal scorer in the history of the tournament. He has 216 goals in 459 appearances. The striker played in the Serie A from 1958 – 1976. He represented AC Milan, Napoli, and Juventus. He was regarded as one of his generation’s best and most complete strikers and as one of Serie A’s and Milan’s greatest-ever players. He is currently a well-known football pundit on Italian TV for SKY Italia and a commentator on Italian radio for RTL 102.5.

4. Giuseppe Meazza (216 Goals)

Giuseppe Meazza played in the Serie A from 1929 – 1943 and 1946 – 1947. He scored 216 goals in 367 games, ending his career with an impressive goals-per-game ratio of 0.59. Meazza’s most notable period in the league was his first stint with Inter Milan. He scored 195 goals in the Serie A in 286 appearances. He returned to Inter Milan for a year at the end of his career. He played for them in the 1946-47 season before retiring at the club.

3. Gunnar Nordahl (225 Goals)

Gunnar Nordahl is the second Swedish player on this list. He is also the third-highest scorer in the league history. The striker has 225 goals scored in 291 appearances. This gives him an unbelievable 0.77 goals-per-game ratio. He quite possibly would have been the top scorer if he had started his career in the Serie A. He represented AC Milan and Roma during his time in the Italian league. Most of the games came with AC Milan. He scored 210 games for AC Milan in 257 appearances.

2. Francesco Totti (250 Goals)

Francesco Totti is regarded as one of the most loyal players that football has ever seen. He spent his entire career at AS Roma. Totti reportedly rejected moves to big teams like Barcelona and Real Madrid to stay with Roma. He made 619 appearances for the club and scored 250 goals in Serie A. This makes him the second-highest goal scorer in the history of the competition. Unlike most players on this list, Totti never played as a striker. This makes this feat even more unimaginable.

Silvio Piola is the highest goal scorer in Serie A history. He scored 274 goals in 537 league appearances. He played from 1929 – 1943, 1946 – 1947, and 1948 – 1954. Piola only represented Italian clubs throughout his career. He played for Pro Vercelli, Lazio, Juventus, and Novara. He scored for all of them in the Serie A except for Torino.
