The ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2023 is set to kick off in South Africa, with ten teams competing for the coveted trophy. The hosts will take on Sri Lanka in the first match of the tournament, with the campaign opener of the showpiece event scheduled to take place on 10th February 2023.
So far, there have been seven editions of the Women’s T20 World Cup since its inception in 2009, with the previous edition being played in 2020. While England won the first edition of the tournament by defeating New Zealand in 2009, Australia has been the dominant force in this tournament, having won it five times so far.
Their first win came in the 2010 edition of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, which was played in the West Indies.
The Aussies managed to get the better of New Zealand and registered to record a thrilling 3-run win to lay their hands on the trophy for the first time.

They went on to replicate the feat in 2012 by defeating England, citing a 4-run victory in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup final which was played in Sri Lanka. Australia completed their hattrick of titles in 2014 when they clashed against England once again in the final. The Aussie team registered a six-wicket victory to win the title once again and make it three times in a row.
West Indies won the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup for the first time in 2016 when the event was hosted in India. They chased down Australia’s total in 19 overs to win the title for the first time. However, Australia managed to bounce back in 2018 when the tournament was held in West Indies by lifting the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup edition for the fourth time. They reached England’s target of 106 runs within 15.1 overs to win the game by eight wickets.
