Roger Binny Announced As 36th BCCI President During AGM

Former India cricketer Roger Binny is elected as the 36th President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The announcement was made during the BCCI’s Annual General Meeting on Tuesday. India’s top cricket body conducted its 91st Annual General Meeting in Mumbai on Monday.

Roger Binny was the only candidate to have filed a nomination for the top post. He now replaces Sourav Ganguly, who has been at the helm of BCCI since taking charge in 2019. While Sourav Ganguly leaves his seat, BCCI secretary Jay Shah is all set to continue to serve BCCI for a second term while Rajeev Shukla also remains in his post as the vice-president of India’s apex cricket council.

Change in BCCI officials following Roger Binny’s appointment

Roger Binny was unopposed during the Annual General Meeting, which also saw Ashish Shelar replace BCCI treasurer Arun Dhumal as the BCCI treasurer. Dhumal has now been handed the chairman post of the Indian Premier League. India’s cricket governing body also gave the green light to conduct a Women’s Indian Premier League, announcing that the competition will kick off in 2023.

Roger Binny has featured in over 72 One Day Internationals and 27 Test matches for India. The 67-year-old was famously a part of the Men In Blue’s 1983 World Cup win. He has also served as the president of the Karnataka State Cricket Association while also working as a member of the BCCI selection committee. He is the third cricketer who has played Test cricket for India and later gone on to be the head of following in the footsteps of Maharaja of Vizianagaram and Sourav Ganguly, whose term ended on Monday.

With Ganguly leaving his pot at BCCI, the former India skipper was rumoured to apply for the International Cricket Council (ICC) chairmanship role, which will be vacated in November. However, as per the latest reports, there has been no discussion on it during the BCCI AGM.

The apex-level cricketing governing council will elect its chairman will be during the board meeting in Melbourne next month. BCCI is not expected to nominate its candidate for the chairman’s position, with the deadline date for the same set to be 20th October.

An unnamed official who attended the BCCI AGM was quoted by PTI stating, “As far as India’s representative to the ICC is concerned, it will be decided by the office-bearers. There was no discussion on the ICC chairmanship. Only matters on the agenda were discussed.”
