On Wednesday, the Supreme Court had accepted The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) plea on the required cooling off period between 2 tenures for office bearers at state associations and the BCCI. It allowed the president of BCCI, Sourav Ganguly as well as secretary and Jay Shah to remain in office. However, according to latest reports the former India captain is could leave his position and contest to be in running for the Chairmanship at the International Cricket Council (ICC).
According to reports published by NDTV Sports, the ex-Indian cricketer is likely to be the next ICC chairman. He is expected to take over from Greg Barkley with the current president’s term set to expire soon. Sourav Ganguly is rumored to take over the position of ICC chairman by November if he is able to win the elections that will be conducted by the ICC. However, Ganguly could face some competition from Barkley itself, as he had shown interest in staying in power for 2 more years during the Birmingham annual conference.

The ICC had earlier decided upon the process of determining the next chairperson at the Birmingham conference. The process now does not require the next chairman to claim two-thirds majority in the election process. The candidate in the running to be the upcoming ICC chairman needs to win 51% of the votes to be elected. In short, the backing of nine votes from the directors in a 16-member board.
If Sourav Ganguly succeeds in getting the votes, he is likely to leave his position at the BCCI. It is being rumored that current BCCI secretary Jay Shah will likely take over the president role with Arun Dhumal likely to fill the secretary position. The former Indian skipper can go on to be the only 5 Indian to become ICC chairman.
The likes of N Srinivasan and Shashank Manohar have been at the position before while Jagmohan Dalmiya and Sharad Pawar were the ICC president, when that position was considered to be the top chair at the cricket’s apex cricketing governing body.
