3 Indian Players Who May Retire After ICC T20 World Cup 2022

The ICC T20 World Cup 2022 is all set to begin on 16th October in Australia with the finals of the tournament scheduled for 13th November. India begins their campaign on 23rd October when they take on arch-rivals Pakistan at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

There will be a lot of pressure on Rohit Sharma’s men who had an outing to forget in the recently concluded Asia Cup campaign. The Men in Blue will be eager to shake it off and aim to win the T20 World Cup with India’s last ICC title coming back in 2013.

The ICC event could also well be the last T20 World Cup for many players. With growing pressure of constant cricket, players look to give up one format of the game to cope up with the cramped schedule. Let’s have a look at players who can retire from T20Is after the ICC T20 World Cup.

Indian players who might be playing their last ICC event

Dinesh Karthik

The veteran wicket keeper made a solid comeback into the side after impressive performances in the IPL. Since his return to India’s T20I squad, Karthik has been given a very specific role of the finisher with Rahul Dravid and co keen on using his finishing prowess at ending stages of the innings. However, the 37-year-old was given only one game to play in at the Asia Cup.

The wicket keeper is on the fag end of his career, and it would not be a surprise if the Indian international decides to hang up his boots after the ICC T20 World Cup in Australia. He will be eager to end this career on a high note and look to win the ICC event.

Ravichandran Ashwin

The veteran spinner was included in India’s T20 World Cup 2022 squad and has made a comeback into the team. With Ravindra Jadeja set to miss out on the tournament, an experienced spinner like Ashwin will come in handy to partner up alongside Yuzvendra Chahal at the tournament.

However, he played just one game in the Asia Cup, which seemed to be a wrong move by the management according to many cricket experts. The 35 year old is more than likely to retire from the format if he does not get adequate game time with a lot of upcoming players already in the ranks.

 Rohit Sharma

Sharma’s fitness has come under the radar with the 35-year-old being rested for many games in the recent past. The national team skipper also missed India’s last Asia Cup clash against Afghanistan. He could look to retire in the shortest format of the game to focus on ICC ODI World Cup in India which is set to be played in 2023. The emergence of KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant and Hardik Pandya as potential captains in the shortest format of the game could make it easier for Rohit to step aside after the ICC T20 World in Australia.
