The 15th edition of the Asia Cup is upon the cricketing world and set to commence on the 27th of August with a clash between Sri Lanka and Afghanistan at the Dubai International Stadium. Despite missing out on calling up premier pacers in the likes of Jasprit Bumrah and Harshal Patel, the Indian team has still managed to pick up a formidable squad.
While the star bowling duo will miss the Asia Cup 2022, they are expected to be back in the Men in Blue squad for the ICC T20 World Cup. With the continental tournament acting as a platform to prepare for the ICC event, the competition to be in the 15 man squad is at its peak. Let’s look at three players who made it to the Asia Cup squad but could be overlooked for the ICC T20 World Cup.
Avesh Khan
The pacer made his T20 debut for the national team against West Indies earlier this year. He was given an extended run after impressing on a few occasions. However, the 25 year old has lacked consistency with the bowler also failing to deliver for the Men in Blue at crucial junctures of the game.
After being named in the upcoming Asia Cup, the right arm-quick could feature in a few games citing the absence of Jasprit Bumrah and Harshal Patel. However, with the duo set to return from their injury for the ICC T20 World Cup, Avesh Khan is unlikely to make it to the T20 WC squad.
Ravi Bishnoi
The young Indian bowler has managed to fare well for the Men in Blue in the limited number of games he has featured in. Despite being only 21 years old, Bishnoi has managed to keep the opposition batters on their toes with his sharp turning googlies. His inclusion in the Indian squad for the Asia Cup came as a surprise to many. However, it does indicate that the team management wanted to have four frontline spinners and options for the UAE wickets.

The pace friendly wickets in Australia could see the Men in Blue opt for more fire power in their pace department by including someone like Deepak Chahar in the ranks. Also, the re-emergence of Kuldeep Yadav could result in Bishnoi missing out on being a member of the Indian T20 World Cup squad.
Ravichandran Ashwin
The veteran made a comeback to the shortest format of the game after featuring in the 2021 T20 World Cup last year and has also been called up for the Asia Cup at UAE. However, the 35 year old finds himself ranked low in the pecking order behind Yuzvendra Chahal, Ravindra Jadeja and Ravi Bishnoi. The Indian team management might also end up picking just two-three spin bowlers in the main squad, considering the Australian conditions.
Apart from the 3 players, the likes of Shreyas Iyer, Axar Patel and Deepak Chahar will also be pushing for a slot in the Indian team. The trio is currently named as reserved players for the Asia Cup squad and will look to impress in UAE if they get a chance to shine at the event. Citing all the conditions, Despite making it to the Asia Cup squad, Ashwin might miss out on featuring in the ICC T20 World Cup.
