BCCI Rumoured To Face Issues From Two Of Its Biggest Sponsors

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has been reported to face some troubles from two of its biggest sponsors in Byju’s and Paytm. The Indian cricket boards’ Apex Council is said to have examined the matter on Thursday.

BCCI troubled by Byju’s and Paytm

Byjus, who currently owns the Sponsorship Rights for the Indian cricket team is said to owe over INR 80 crore to the BCCI. The ed-tech company is also rumored to have also failed in submitting the required bank guarantee which is required by India’s apex cricket governing council.

India’s news agency PTI has quoted an un-named BCCI source speaking on the issue saying, “As of today, Byju’s owes dues of Rs 86.21 crore to the Board.” Byju’s spokesperson, on the other hand, was quoted by PTI saying, “We have extended the contract with the BCCI, but it is not yet signed. After the contract signing is done, the payments will happen as per the contractual payment terms. So, there are no dues pending from our side.”

The ed tech company has been the main sponsors of the Indian cricket team alongside Oppo in 2019. However, Byjus went on to be the principal sponsors after Oppo ceded the sponsorship rights of the Men in Blue to them.

Paytm, on the other hand reportedly wants to sublicense the title rights to MasterCard. The Indian cricket team’s title sponsor has been in talks with BCCI and asked the body if they can transfer its rights to a third party. The fintech startup wants to give away their title rights for India’s home series to Mastercard.

Earlier, the fin tech star up had missed the timeline which ended in July regarding their request to reassignment their title sponsorship rights. However, the BCCI is said to be considering the their request and taking Paytm’s proposal into account due to a “longstanding” relationship between the two involved parties.

An BCCI official was quoted saying, “Paytm has requested the BCCI for reassignment and the board is considering it.”Paytm had extended its position as the title sponsor the Indian cricket teams’ for local and international cricket events in India by four years  after winning their bid of INR 3.80 crore per match in August 2019.
