The decision to appoint Berrington as the team captain was made after consulting the senior players in the Scotland team. Cricket Scotland’s interim head of performance Toby Bailey alongside a number of coaches were also involved in the decision.
Berrington shared a press release where he says, “I feel incredibly honoured and privileged to lead this team and represent my country. Having come through the Scottish system from a young age, I’m very proud to take on the role of men’s captain.”
He added, “As a team we’re very much looking forward to what’s ahead – three home series over the next couple of months is a great opportunity for us to keep building on the team’s recent success and we’ll be doing all we can to produce some good results in front of a home crowd.”
Scotland coach Shane Burger was also quoted saying: “I have no doubt that Richie will lead the Scottish men’s side with distinction and is the right person for the job. His stature not only in the Scottish game, but world cricket, makes him a fitting appointment – we have a leader in Richie that everyone can be proud of.”
Matthew Cross has been named as the deputy to Berrington for the upcoming Tri Series. The wicket keeper is set to be the vice-captain when they take the field for the matches against Nepal and Namibia. The upcoming matches will be played at the Clydesdale and Ayr clubs and will also see Coetzer be included in the the 14-man squad participate in the tri-series next month.
