The purple cap is awarded to the leading wicket-taker in the Indian Premier League. The league introduced the purple cap in the mega event to encourage the bowlers. Here we list down players who have won purple caps through the years.

Sohail Tanvir

The former Pakistani left-handed pacemen Sohail Tanvir won the purple cap while playing  for Rajasthan Royals in 2008. Tanvir managed to pick 22 wickets in 11 matches with an average of 12.09, an economy of 6.46, and a strike rate of 11.22. 

Rudra Pratap Singh (RP Singh)

The former Indian left-handed pacer Rudra Pratap Singh is another lefty who joins this list. Singh was the leading wicket-taker for Deccan Chargers in 2009, where the veteran managed to pick 23 wickets in 16 matches at an average of 18.13, an economy of 6.98.

Pragyan Ojha

The former Indian left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha was the leading wicket-taker for Deccan Chargers in 2010. Ojha took 21 wickets in 16 matches at an average of 20.42, an economy of 7.29, and a strike rate of 16.8.

Lasith Malinga

The Sri Lankan legend Lasith Malinga is one of the best bowlers the world has ever seen. Malinga was the leading wicket-taker for Mumbai Indians in 2011. In the ongoing edition, Malinga managed to pick 28 wickets in 16 matches at an average of 13.39, an economy of 5.95, and a strike rate of 13.5. 

Morne Morkel

Known as hit the deck bowler, the South African veteran Morne Morkel was the leading wicket-taker for Delhi Daredevils (Delhi Capitals) in 2012. Morkle took 25 wickets in 16 matches at an average of 18.12, an economy of 7.19, and a strike rate of 15.1. 

Dwayne Bravo

The Trinidadian all-rounder Dwayne Johnson Bravo is one of the bowlers who bagged the purple cap twice in his IPL career in 2013 and 2015. Bravo was the leading wicket-taker for CSK in the 2013 and 2015 editions. Bravo grabbed 32 wickets in 18 matches at an average of 15.33, an economy of 7.95, and a strike rate of 11.7. In 2015, he bagged 26 wickets in 17 matches at an average of 16.38, an economy of 8.14, and a strike rate of 12.

Mohit Sharma

Mohit was the purple cap holder in the 2014 season while playing for CSK. Sharma played 16 matches for CSK and bagged 23 wickets at an average of 19.65, an economy of 7.95, and a strike rate of 14. 

Bhuvneshwar Kumar

Bhuvneshwar Kumar is the second bowler after Bravo to bag the purple cap twice and became the first bowler to achieve this feat on consecutive basis. He took the purple cap both times while playing for SRH in 2016 and 2017. In 2016, he took 23 wickets in 17 matches at an average of 21.3, an economy of 7.42, and a strike rate of 17.2. In 2017, he bagged 26 wickets in 14 matches at an average of 14.19, an economy of 7.05 and a strike rate of 12. 

Andrew Tye 

Australian-born right-handed pace bowler Andrew Tye played for KXIP in 2018, where he was the leading wicket-taker in that season. Tye grabbed 24 wickets in 14 matches at an average of 18.66, an economy of 8, and a strike rate of 14. 

Imran Tahir

A Pakistan-born, South African, and veteran leggie represented CSK in the 2019 season and eventually became the leading wicket-taker for the CSK. Tahir took 26 wickets in 17 matches at an average of 16.57, an economy of 6.69, and a strike rate of 14.84. This South African cricketer also grabbed two 4-wicket hauls in that season.

Kagiso Rabada

Kagiso Rabada was part of the Delhi Capitals campaign, where with the help of his magical spells, Rabada managed to push their franchise to play their first-ever finals in IPL. Rabada bagged 30 wickets in 17 matches at an average of 18.26, an economy of 8.34, and a strike rate of 13.3. Rabada took two 4-wicket hauls in that season.

Harshal Patel

It was a dream season for Haryana-based lad Harshal Patel who equals the record with Dwayne Bravo to take most wickets in a single edition of IPL. He also became the first RCBian to bag the purple cap. Patel took 32 wickets in 15 matches at an average of 14.34, an economy of 8.14, and a strike rate of 10.56. Patel also took one 4-wicket and 5-wicket haul against Mumbai Indians in that season.

The mentioned players have proved to be legends in the IPL. While few are already playing this mega league whilst earning big money, some have retired and are enjoying their second inning in the commentary box or playing a different leagues.
