Pro Kabaddi League Season VI dates announced

We’re often talking about cricket as the most followed sport in India, but the game of Kabaddi has been rapidly growing in popularity, especially since the launch of the Pro Kabaddi League (PKL) in India. With every passing season, the PKL has been getting more and more popular among the masses.

Earlier, the Pro Kabaddi League was conducted twice a year on a smaller scale, but Season 5 took the tournament to the next level. It saw the league expand from 8 participating teams to 12, with 138 matches played between July-October 2017 and a record 313 million viewers – the most watched Indian sporting event (not counting cricket).

Now, the dates for PKL Season VI have been announced, with the existing format to be continued and the action to go on over the course of 13 weeks. The sixth edition of the VIVO Pro Kabaddi League will kick off on 5th October 2018 and the final will be played on 5th January 2019. The dates have been pushed back to avoid colliding with the 2018 Asian Games.

“The change of window for the League from the usual July-October cycle has been actioned to ensure full availability of top players from India and overseas, given the 2018 Asian Games. This window also allows the teams and fans to capitalise on the opportunities afforded by the festive season. The whole League ecosystem is geared to provide the highest standard Kabaddi experience for fans in Season VI,” said Anupam Goswami, PKL League Commissioner.

While the contracts awarded in this league are not even close to those seen in the Indian Premier League, they’re slowly on its way up, with the Season VI auction seeing 6 players to go for INR 1+ crore contracts. Haryana’s Monu Goyat bagged the biggest deal of INR 1.51 crore, going to the Haryana Steelers.
