When it comes to Test cricket, one cannot avoid that the format is the purest form of the game requiring high standards. The first official test match took place in 1877 between England and Australia at Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). After 145 years of test cricket, several players now hold numerous cricketing records such as most test runs, most wickets, most hundreds, etc.
You may have witnessed numerous players celebrating after hitting a century and making several records. Many players have fallen for nervous 90s most times in the test cricket, and there are some big names on the list. Players like Sachin Tendulkar, Ab de Villiers, Alister Cook, etc., are the players who have been dismissed on nervous 90s quite often. Alvin Kallicharran is a former West Indian player who played Test Cricket for the Caribbean team in the 1970s as a left-handed batter and a right arm off-spinner. Kallicharran made his test debut against New Zealand on 6 April 1972, where he scored 4399 runs in 66 matches at an average of 44.43.
In his test career, the veteran slashed 12 centuries and 21 half-centuries with the highest score of 187 runs. Kallicharran also holds an embarrassing feat against his name, the most dismissals in the nervous 90s. The legend was dismissed eight times in the 90s. Modern-day legends AB de Villiers and Inzamam-ul-Haq also share this record with Alvin Kallicharran.
Aussie-born former cricketer Michael Slater is another victim of the nervous 90s. Slater made his debut in Ashes against England in 1993. Slater has played 74 matches for Australia and scored 5312 runs with an average of 42.83. Slater slashed 14 centuries and 21 half-centuries with the highest 219 runs. He has been dismissed nine times in his nervous 90s, making him the fourth player on the list.
You might not be surprised by seeing Sachin Tendulkar’s name on the list. Tendulkar is a former Indian batsman and batting maestro who has held several records across the format for centuries. Tendulkar made his debut against arch-rivals Pakistan in 1989. Since then, he has played 200 test matches (which is the most by any player in the history of test cricket).
No wonder the veteran holds the record of most runs scored by a player in test format, with 15,921 runs at an average of 53.78. Tendulkar slashed 51 centuries and 68 half-centuries in his distinguished career with the highest score of 248* run against Bangladesh. He has been dismissed ten times in his Test career in the 90s, due to which he is third on the list. He also features in ODI format 18 times which is the most by any player in white-ball format.
Another Indian veteran Rahul Dravid and a test match specialist, joined the group with most 90s in his test career. Dravid made his debut in 1996 against England at Lords. On debut, he slashed 96 runs of green track against fiery English bowlers.
Dravid has played 164 matches for India, where the legend had scored 13288 runs at an average of 52.31. Dravid has also scored 36 centuries and 63 half-centuries with the highest score of 270 runs against Pakistan in Rawalpindi. Dravid was the joint holder of a record with Sachin Tendulkar of most 90s in his test career (10).
Another Aussie-born cricketer Steve Waugh is the former batsmen and captain of the Australian side. The veteran has played 168 games for Australia and had scored 10927 runs with an average of 51.06. Waugh has also scored 32 centuries and 50 half-centuries with the highest score of 200 runs. Steve Waugh has been dismissed ten times, which is the joint-most by any player with Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar.
The names mentioned above are indeed some of the best in the world. However, we wish players from this generation don’t have to see their names in this list of most dismissals in the nervous nineties.
