The Ben Stokes-led team end the first day with 506-4 on board in the first test against Pakistan at Rawalpindi on 1st December 2022. The score became the fifth highest runs scored on a single day in history. The visitors come out all guns blazing on 1st December 2022 when they played their first red ball game after 17 years in the country.
Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett came out strong against an inexperienced Pakistan bowling attack. The visitors managed to score 174 runs in the morning session, with 158 runs coming in the afternoon session. The last session of the day saw them manage to score 174 again as England ended with 506-4 at the end of the first day.
England’s aggressive batting approach also saw them create a record as it was the first instance where four batters scored hundreds on 1st of a Test match. While Crawley smashed his hundred from 86 balls, Duckett managed to reach the three-figure mark in 105 balls. Olli Pope got to his hundred from 90 balls, while Brook registered his century in just 80 deliveries.
There have only been five instances when more than 500 runs have been scored on a single day of a test match. Before England’s 506-4 in December 2022, the last time 500 runs were scored in a single day of a test happened on the 2nd day of a test match between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. The incident took place on 21st July 2002 at Colombo.

At the end of the first day, Sri Lanka found themselves 32/0, with Marvan Atapattu scoring 20*, while Russel Arnold managed to remain unbeaten on 10* at the end of 7 overs. The hosts ended up scoring 509 runs on a single day to end day two at 541/9.
The England cricket team, alongside India, currently hold the record of scoring the most number of runs on a single day of a game. They scored 588 runs on the second day of the Manchester test back in 1936. Apart from the English batters, Vijay Merchant 7 and Mushtaq Ali 105* propelled India to 190/0 to ensure that most runs were scored on a single day of a game.
The second most runs scored on a single day also belongs to England. They achieved the feat, scoring 522 runs on the second day of the test match. against South Africa at the Lord’s Cricket ground in 1924. The third most runs scored on a single day was by Sri Lanka, who scored 509 runs on the second day of the Columbo test in 2002.
England finds themselves on the list once again for scoring 500 runs on a single day of a test match. It happened during the England vs South Africa back in 1935 at The Oval. Both teams came together to score 508 runs on 17th August 1935.
