5 Golden Rules While Selecting A Top Order Batsman

The T20 Season is on and it is growing bigger and better. It started with ‘The Hundred’ which technically wasn’t a T20 series but had all the essence and flair of a T20 game. Then it was followed by the ongoing Caribbean Premier League (CPL), followed by the Indian Premier League (IPL), and then the T20 World Cup. Not to forget the Big Bash League that will soon follow after.

With such a prospective and lucrative season on display, how can a fantasy player stay calm and quiet? The big runs and huge sixes are bound to draw you towards the world of fantasy sports. Isn’t selecting a batsman a bit tough as there are too many stalwarts on the field? Well, not to worry as today, I will be telling you about the 5 golden rules that I follow while selecting the top-order batsmen. So here we go:

1)The form of a batsman:

This is the basic and first criteria that need to be checked before selecting a top-order batsman. A batsman who is in form should always be prioritized over an out-of-form batsman. The fantasy players often overlook this aspect and go in with comparatively bigger names compared to an in-form batsman.

2)The nature of the batsman:

There are few batsmen who love to go after the bowlers from ball one and then there are some who are slow starters. After looking at the form, the next criteria that are to be looked at is the temperament of a particular batsman. For eg: Martin Guptill would love to go berserk from the first ball whereas Chris Gayle would love to take a few balls at the start to get going. 

3) Performance of the batsman based on innings:

This is perhaps the most important yet the most neglected aspect while selecting a top-order batsman. There are a few batters who love to score big while batting first and then there are some who love to chase. A good fantasy player must keep this aspect in mind if it is a likely tossup between two options.

For eg: Rohit Sharma’s majority of performances have come while batting first. On the other hand, there is no better chase master in cricket than Virat Kohli. So, choose them wisely. 

4)Strengths and Weakness of a particular batsman: 

In modern-day cricket, the strong and weak points of a batsman are well documented. We have often seen the opponent team introduce a particular bowler against a particular batsman at the start of innings to get the batsman out. These player battles are very instrumental in determining the outcome of a particular match. Therefore, it is extremely important for a fantasy player to know the strength and weakness of a particular batsman before selecting him in his team.

For eg: Players like Johnny Bairtsow and Jos Buttler are vulnerable to wrist spinners in the beginning of their innings. So, there are high changes that they might get dismissed early by the opposition spinners. Contrarily if they survive the opening spell they can score heavily after getting set.

5) Choosing a batsman based on his skills for C/VC :

There goes an old proverb in cricket stating that, “Form is temporary but class is important.” This implies even while selecting a top order batsman. All players have good days and bad days. But we cannot just disregard a good batsman based on his bad form. So a fantasy player needs to follow his instincts too while making a call. Who knows when a batsman can come out of form and score big?

For eg: If I am playing a Fantasy Match, I would probably make a batsman of the calibre of Virat Kohli as C/VC in Mega Leagues even if his form is bad and he is going through a lean patch.
