5 Cringy Cricket Movies Of All Time: Cricket in India is a hot topic. Thanks to the massive popularity of the sport, every second person in the country follows the game and looks forward to watching the game in every format. When it comes to cricket, no other nation can touch the charisma of Indian cricket. It’s no secret that cricket in India is a religion where everyone loves to talk, read, and want to know about the game.
Nothing except Bollywood can match the cricket craze in India, as both industries hold an immense fan following. Thanks to the intense investment of emotions in both sectors, Bollywood decided to use cricket as a strong theme, which proved to be a wealthy investment as films like Lagaan, MS Dhoni, Kai Po Che, and Iqbal proved that Bollywood and cricket have good chemistry. Still, there were also several incidents where fans thought Bollywood should stay away from the game! (And I agree!)

As an ardent Akshay Kumar fan, I was of the opinion that Kumar should try his hands at a sports movie. And my wish came true when Khiladi Kumar announced Patiala House. The trailer got me excited for the movie, but my expectations came crashing down when I saw cricket was added in a family drama which took away from the sporting element. A father-son tussle over-powering the cricket aspect was the last thing fans wanted to see. In my opinion, cricket-based films should focus more on the sport if used as a theme rather than just a background story.. Patiala House could have been a wonder, but the lack of a plot and major thematic issues, the film was a let down.
How can someone approve Dil Bole Hadippa? This Shahid Kapoor starrer is surely not a movie any cricket fan would love! Despite the love angle weaved into a cricketing theme, the movie failed miserably to capture the essence of cricket. Not only the movie failed to break the stereotype of women’s cricket, but it also disappointed fans who expected fireworks..
Chain Kulii Ki Main Kulii is a decent Bollywood movie that gives viewers a genuine feel-good experience. In my opinion, it wasn’t a bad film, but it didn’t work out as the fans didn’t find a glimpse of real cricket in the storyfilm. This is a children’s film that can be enjoyed with a family. However, if you are a big cricket fan, this is not the film for you.
Just because cricket has a huge fan base, you cannot use it loosely. The film is something that focuses more on superstitious beliefs. I agree luck can be a factor, but all other elements are equally important to win a 50-over game or a Test decider. Sonam Kapoor in the Zoya Factor played the role of a lucky mascot that helps India to win matches! Seriously? Do you really think that you need luck to win a game? Where is hard work, then?
When a star cast of Suresh Raina, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, along with international players, fails to draw cricket audiences to the theaters, you can easily understand where the movie is headed. Even Waqar Younis jokingly said after seeing this movie, “Thank God I retired and did not have to bowl to him.” This film has significant flaws, which leads to a lot of disappointment for cricket fans. Victory had a lot of potential and could have been a masterpiece if it was executed properly.
In my opinion, Bollywood needs to explore the game better in terms of technicalities and create more in-depth cricketing flicks. Well, it’s time to wrap things off. Feel free to share your thoughts if you come across other cricket-related movies that, according to you, are cringy. Feel free to drop your opinions in the comment section. Till then, stay tuned for more updates!
