Rohit Sharma’s fitness has once again come under scrutiny with the Indian captain walking off during the third game against the West Indies at St Kitts on Tuesday. The 35-year-old looked in deep discomfort and decided to leave the field after a long chat with the physio within the first 2 overs of Indian innings.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) shared an update on his injury revealing how the captain is being monitored by the medical team. With Sharma’s availability for the next match as well as the remainder of this series under question, Let’s have a look at three players who could be India’s stand-in captain for the remaining T20Is.
Hardik Pandya
Hardik Pandya made a sensational comeback to competitive cricket with the Indian Premier League leading Gujarat Titans to a title win in their maiden IPL season. The Indian all-rounder impressed everyone with his leadership skills in the 2022 edition of franchise-based tournament. He was given the opportunity to captain the Men in Blue earlier in June. Pandya took change of the Indian team during their 2-0 T20I series win over Ireland this year and caught to catch the eye with his decision-making silks.

His experience of leading a team the shortest format as well as all-round ability of batting in the middle-order and picking up wickets makes him a mainstay in the Indian team. Given his experience at the international level, Hardik Pandya is a potential candidate to be India’s next T20I captain and could be tested out once again is Rohit Sharma is ruled out against West Indies.
Rishabh Pant
The wicket keeper batter was named as India’s stand-in captain for the home series against South Africa earlier this year. Pant got the opportunity to lead the Indian team after KL Rahul was ruled out of the series while Rohit Sharma was in England preparing for the one off Test. The 24-year-old led India to a 2-2 draw in the 5-match home series against the Proteas.
Apart from that stint in charge, Pant has also been captaining his IPL side Delhi Capitals in the last two editions of the tournament. As far as his captaincy experience is concerned, Rishabh Pant is young and has been amongst the list of potential players that could be groomed to take charge of the Men in Blue in the future. He remains one of the captaincy options that India Rahul Dravid could opt for if Rohit Sharma misses out the USA T20Is.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar
The Indian speedster has been a regular feature in India’s white-ball setup over the last few years. Being a senior member of the team, the UP based cricketer was recently named as the vice-captain of India during the away limited-overs series against Sri Lanka last year. The pacer has also been a captain leading his IPL side Sunrisers Hyderabad in a few games.
He was also the vice captain for the Men in Blues during their recently concluded T20I series against Ireland. With the likes of senior cricketers in the form of Virat Kohli, KL Rahul and Jasprit Bumrah rested for the tour, Kumar remains to be the senior most member of the Indian contingent. He could be handed the reins if Rahul Dravid decides against adding the pressure of captaincy on the Pant or Pandya.
