3 Major Takeaways From India’s ICC T20 World Cup Squad

The Indian cricket team have announced their 15-member squad for the ICC T20 World Cup which is set to be played in Australia. The ICC event begins on 16th October with the Super 12 stages of the tournament starting 5 days later. India’s first match of the tournament sees them square off with arch rivals Pakistan at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on 23rd October.

The 15-member squad alongside the 4 reserves sees Jasprit Bumrah and Harshal Patel return to the squad after missing out on Asia Cup 2022 due to injuries. It also sees Ravi Bishnoi being named in the reserves alongside Mohammed Shami, Deepak Chahar and Shreyas Iyer as we look at 3 major takeaways from the World Cup squad.

India’s Triple Threat Up Front

India’s top three of Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, and Virat Kohli are set to feature together at the ICC T20 World Cup. Over the last few series, the Indian cricket team was seen benching either off the top 3 players with one off the stars either rested or being ruled out of participation due to an injury. However, It is unlikely to happen this time around.

The trio is known to start off slow but also boost the ability to bat deep into the innings and take the game away in clutch situations. With the Rahul Dravid coached side looking to play an aggressive kind of batting approach, it remains interesting to see how the trio persists at one of the biggest stages in Twenty20 cricket. Behind the top 3, middle order star Suryakumar Kumar has also fixed his position as India’s number four in the shortest format of the game.

India’s balance disturbed in Jadeja’s absence

Ravindra Jadeja’s injury sees him miss out on participation at the World Cup in Australia. The Men in Blue will miss a crucial cog with the Saurashtra based all-rounder not only bowling 4 overs for the team but also batting lower down the order while also shielding important positions on the field.

Axar Patel has been roped in the national team as his replacement. However, he has not batted higher up the order like Jadeja or ever faced more than 15 balls in an innings during his T20I career. While he may get the occasional slog going, questions remain if he can come up with match winning performances in Australia.

Bishnoi’s exclusion for lower order batting depth

Wrist-spinners thrive in Australian conditions citing the big grounds Down Under. While Yuzvendra Chahal is Rohit Sharma’s first choice in T2oIs, he is also the only wrist-spinner in the squad as Ravi Bishnoi was named in the reserve’s list. He has taken 16 wickets in 10 T20Is while registering economy of 7.08 an over so far and also had a solid performance at Asia Cup 2022.

The young spinner did everything right but faced the axe and was dropped from the 15-men squad. Despite doing nothing wrong, the BCCI preferred to pick Ravi Ashwin and Axar over Ravi Bishnoi. It hints at a clear indication of the Indian cricket board focusing on Ashwin and Axar’s batting ability as their skills with the bat earning them berths ahead of Bishnoi on the flight to Australia.
