Abid Ali had a brilliant One Day International (ODI) debut while representing the Pakistan cricket team against the Australian cricket team on 29th March 2019. The Australian team batted first, and good performances by Aaron Finch (39 runs in 42 balls), Usman Khawaja (62 runs in 78 balls), Glenn Maxwell (98 runs in 82 balls), and Alex Carey (55 runs in 67 balls) helped them set a target of 278 for Pakistan to chase down. Abid Ali opened the batting for Pakistan and made an incredible ODI debut, scoring 112 runs in 119 balls at a strike rate of 94.11. While his and Rizwan’s performances got them close, Pakistan ended up losing the game by a mere six runs.
Phillip Hughes put in a fantastic performance on his One Day International (ODI) debut against the Sri Lankan cricket team on 11th January 2013. He opened the batting for Australia alongside Aaron Finch, and while Finch and Khwaja both lost their wickets early, Hughes scored 112 runs in 129 balls at a strike rate of 86.82. This performance helped the Australian team reach a total of 305 runs in 50 overs. The pressure of chasing this total turned out to be too much for the Sri Lankan cricket team to handle, and Australia were able to bowl them out for just 198 and win the game by a massive margin of 107 runs.
The One Day International (ODI) game between the South African cricket team and the Ireland cricket team, which took place on 25th September 2016, saw an incredible debut. This was the first time Temba Bavuma represented South Africa in the ODI format, and he managed to capture everyone’s attention. South Africa batted first, and Bavuma scored 113 runs in 123 balls at a strike rate of 91.86, which helped his country set a target of 355. Ireland tried their best to chase this down, but they were bowled out for just 148 runs, with JP Duminy picking up four wickets, and South Africa won the game by a massive margin of 206 runs.

Andy Flower had an incredible performance on his ODI debut for the Zimbabwe cricket team against the Sri Lankan cricket team on 23rd February 1992. Zimbabwe batted first, and while they lost early wickets, their one opener did not go out. This was Andy Flower, who scored 115 runs in 152 balls at a strike rate of 75.65. This helped Zimbabwe set a target of 313 for Sri Lanka to chase. While Flower but in an incredible performance on his debut, it was all in vain as the Sri Lankan team put in some good performances of its own to chase the score down in 49.2 overs and win the game by three wickets with four balls to spare.
Martin Guptill made his One Day International (ODI) debut for the New Zealand cricket team on 10th January 2009 against the West Indies cricket team. The New Zealand cricket team batted first, and Guptill opened the batting with Brendon McCullum. Guptill ended up hitting 122 runs in 135 balls at a strike rate of 90.37 without losing his wicket to help the New Zealand national team set a target of 276 for the West Indies. The target was reduced to 235 in 40 overs, and while West Indies started out well, scoring 64 runs in 10.3 overs without losing a single wicket, the game ended up being called off and yielded no result.

Mark Chapman had one of the best One Day International (ODI) debuts on 16th November 2015 in the game between the Hong Kong cricket team and the United Arab Emirates cricket team. Hong Kong batted first, and Chapman walked in at number four to make an impact on the game. The Hong Kong star scored 124 runs in 116 balls at a strike rate of 106.89 without losing his wicket to propel the Hong Kong cricket team’s total to 298. The United Arab Emirates cricket team tried valiantly to chase this score down, but Hong Kong was able to bowl them out for just 209 runs, winning the game by a margin of 89 runs.
Also, on this day Colin Ingram and Rusty Theron made their ODI debuts, against Zimbabwe. Ingram scored 124 and Theron claimed 3 wickets. Colin Ingram made his One Day International (ODI) debut for the South African cricket team on 15th October 2010 against the Zimbabwe cricket team. South Africa batted first, and while Hashim Amla (110 runs in 96 balls) and David Miller (51 runs in 31 balls) did well, Ingram stood out the most, especially in his ODI debut. He scored 124 runs in 126 balls at a strike rate of 98.41 to help his country reach a total of 351. Brendan Taylor put in a brilliant performance for Zimbabwe, scoring 145 runs in 136 balls at a strike rate of 106.61, but with no other support, they ended up being restricted to 287 and lost the game by 64 runs.
Rahmanullah Gurbaz put in an incredible performance for the Afghanistan cricket team on 21st January 2021 against the Ireland cricket team. This was Gurbaz’s debut in the One Day International (ODI) format. Afghanistan batted first, and Rahmanullah Gurbaz started off with a decent partnership opening with Javed Ahmadi. While Ahmadi lost his wicket, Gurbaz went on to make 127 runs in 127 balls at a strike rate of 100 to help the Afghanistan cricket team set a target of 288. Ireland came very close to chasing this score and ended up reaching 271 runs in 50 overs but fell just short and lost the game by 16 runs.
Desmond Haynes had one of the best One Day International (ODI) debuts against the Australian cricket team on 22nd February 1978. West Indies batted first, and Richard Austin, Viv Richards, Alvin Kallicharran, and Faoud Bacchus all lost their wickets early. However, Haynes stood strong and managed to score 148 runs in 136 balls at a strike rate of 108.82 to help his country set a target of 314 for the Australian cricket team to try and chase down. This target was revised to 226 in 36 overs, and while West Indies were unable to bowl out their opponent, they ended up restricting them to a total of 181 runs and won the game by a margin of 44 runs.

Matthew Breetzke recently broke the record for the highest score made during his ODI debut. Breetzke made his debut for the South African team on 10th February 2025 against the New Zealand team. South Africa batted first. Breetzke opened the batting with Temba Bavuma. The South African star managed to score 150 runs in 148 balls at a strike rate of 101.35 to help his team set a target of 305 for the New Zealand team to chase down. While this was quite a high target, Breetzke’s century ended up being in vain as New Zealand managed to chase the target down in 48.4 overs and win the game.
