Ex-Wynn Resorts Exec Faces Jail Time In College Scandal

Former Wynn Resorts executive, Gamal Aziz has been sentenced to one year in prison and charged a $250,000 fine after being convicted of paying a bribe of $300,000 to a university for his daughter’s admission. This was a part of the ‘Varsity Blues’ college admission scandal.

This is the longest sentence that anyone in connection with the scandal has received. Aziz’s sentence was passed by the US District Judge Nathaniel Gorton in Boston. In all, 57 people have been charged in the investigation which uncovered a scandal wherein parents colluded with William ‘Rick’ Singer, a college admissions consultant, and gave bribes to secure admissions to prestigious colleges for their children.

With Aziz’s sentencing, Judge Gorton said he was sending a message to other rich parents who took to corrupt ways to secure admissions. According to the judge, Aziz showed a ‘lack of integrity, morality, and common sense,’ through his actions. The judge also accused Aziz of stealing an admission spot from a deserving student who did not have the kind of advantages he did. Outside the courtroom, Aziz’s lawyer said that the former President and Executive Director of Wynn Macau intend to appeal the decision.
