Ex Tamil Nadu CM Calls For Law To Ban Online Games In The State

All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) coordinator O.Panneerselvam called for the enactment of a stringent law to ban online games in the state of Tamil Nadu. He recalled that the Madras High Court struck down the Tamil Nadu Gaming and Police Laws (Amendment) Act 2021 in August 2021, which led to the ban on online gaming with stakes. 

The court made it clear that the legislature would be at the liberty to implement a law regulating online games. He added, “It is not known if the State government has enacted a fresh set of laws or even appealed against the judgment.” It cited that excessive advertisement by online gaming companies promised rewards up to Rs. 2000 lured players into compulsively participating in these games, leading them to cultivate a habit or eventually become addicted.   

Talking about the law imposed in 2021, the AIADMK leader said that although lotteries were banned in 2003, youngsters were still getting addicted to these games. He also expressed his concern over the advertisements for online games and how youngsters were influenced by them.

Panneerselvam also added that several people committed suicide after losing money in these games and that the AIADMK government enacted a law proposing a ban on these games. Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazagam (AMMK) general secretary T.T.V Dhinakaran urged the government to consider two primary factors while hiring, namely, 

• Based on their seniority, they have registered themselves with employment exchanges for at least 20 years.
• He also added that several posts of physical education teachers were lying vacant, and it is unfair for the players to hold written tests for candidates who are essentially sports players.
