AMD Valorant Cup: Largest PC Esports event in India

Businesses have been shutting down since the outbreak of COVID-19 right from early 2020, although the gaming industry has been booming. Gaming in India is growing rapidly and to support this growth, tournaments are being organised frequently, attracting more and more participants every day.

Gaming has become a part of many people’s lives mostly as a distraction from boredom as social distancing and lockdown have stricken, this pandemic. A Bengaluru based Indian esports platform, The Esports Club, has remained active in partnering with companies to serve the gaming and esports industries in India. The Esports Club had announced the first AMD Valorant CUP with a prize pool of INR 70,000. 

Valorant is a free-to-play multiplayer tactical first-person shooter game developed by Riot Games. The tournaments initially consisted of 64 teams but with the response for a PC online title with over 4,000 players registering was a huge hit. 

Former Overwatch and League of Legends professional player, Mansoor ‘Nabu’ Ahmed, also Head of Operations and Tournament Director, The Esports Club stated  “I couldn’t be more excited to be a part of the Valorant Esports Landscape in India. Riot knows how to build an esports ecosystem and they’ve done a phenomenal job with the game so soon after launch. This event is just the first stepping stone in our journey with Valorant in India“.

The tournament that took place between 21st June and the finale on the 30th June, hosted around 408 teams in the cup. Teams from India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka were featured in the tournament and the prize pool was split among the top 8 teams of the tournament.

According to Sukamal Pegu, Publishing Head (Southeast Asia) at Riot Games, “Valorant is being brought to India with a clear roadmap and genuine support. India, along with other South Asian countries are touted to get their own servers later during this year. Building upon the experience from the most successful esports title, League of Legends and developing on shortcoming of competitors like Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Riots Games are aiming to make Valorant a globally accepted shooter title and establish themselves in the FPS category”.
